A rather extended (2300+words) but outstanding overview of the legendary American University of Beirut and its status among other unis in the Middle East.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/ideas/2016/03/13/thanassi/srqoNpAZiUoySk2sn42kZM/story.html

"THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY of Beirut used to tally its influence by the number of its alumni among the region’s monarchs, presidents, and prime ministers. Today, AUB’s boosters have stopped counting heads of state but remain as obsessed as ever with reclaiming the luster of an institution that remains the best-reputed and most independent university in the Arab world....."

Interesting article. I worked with Dr Kerr's wife at AUC and their sons attended CAC in Cairo. One of their sons became quite a famous professional basketball star in the US.

I hope this new president can bring a bit of its luster back...

Lebanon has two major problems: No president for two years, and big mountains of garbage in its streets.
Without solving these two problems, AUB will stop acting as one of the best universities in the region.

"Lebanon is better off than many of its neighbors in the Arab world, and that’s saying something when the most basic essentials of life and government barely function: For nearly two years, Lebanon has been unable to elect a president, and for nearly one, it hasn’t been able to dispose of the nation’s garbage."
