Nice post Simon. However, I just want to mention that a first-year teacher, working full-time, would generally be on a fair bit more than $1000 a month. Say you get $17 an hour for 18 teaching hours a week [not a great first gig, but these sort of positions are out there] that would mean that you'd be on about 1,300 USD a month gross.
