Unless you can prove you're not being paid.

You can work with at a Chinese business/school/factory if you have a business visa. But only if you are being paid by a foreign company from the foreign office.
If I work for IBM in NY they can send me to China on a business visa and I can work for IBM China. HOWEVER, I have to be paid by IBM in NY, initially in USD. If I'm paid by the IBM office in China then I'm working illegally.

So. Yes, you can work at a Chinese school while on a business visa, but your paycheck must be issued by their partner or parent company in another country. If you're teaching at a Chinese school on a business visa and being paid by that school you are working illegally.

Roll dem bones.

I worked for a private school, AKA language mill some years ago that employed people who were not eligible for a work permit as a 'foreign expert'. One was German and the others were Filipino, so they didn't qualify as native English speakers. The school worked round this by obtaining F, or business visas for them by saying they were 'managers'. They even had fancy certificates printed for them that said they were managers. I know this because I went on a visa run with the German guy who showed me the certificate he had to give to the visa agency in Macau that provided his F visa. The owners of the school had connections and therefore serious guanxi with the PSB that processed the work and resident permits for the city.

Everyone knew what was going on, but everyone pretended everything was okay. That's all great until something goes wrong, at which point you end up in jail until you are deported. Having said that, none of the 'managers' I knew ever had any problems, and at least one of them is still teaching five years later. Your mileage may vary.

I did it for more than 5 years, from mid 2009 to late 2014, mostly with my own 1-man private tutoring business in Guangzhou (convenient for visa runs to Hong Kong) but I worked numerous side jobs with one corporate training outfit, one high school, several kindergartens, one primary school, and numerous small private outfits mostly catering to adults. It's no problem in spite of any negative nonsense you might read here. If you're serious get one of the 10-year visas and you're set for a long time.

Guys, there is already a sticky about this: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=48879

Maybe we should rename it from Teaching on a tourist visa is that bad? to include all visa types. There is literally nothing about this topic that has not been said already; no perspective, positive or negative, that has not been given.

Yeah, but it's illegal.

Press for a Z visa or don't do it. China's work visa process is a very well-beaten path, so employers have no excuse not to get a Z visa for teachers.
