I've been offered a job in Los Reyes Michoacan Mexico.

I have read that the Mexican state of Michoacan can be dangerous, though I know from experience from living abroad that such accounts can be exaggerated.

So I'd like to ask anyone who has lived in Los Reyes, Michoacan, is it generally safe there?

Thank-you very much for your time.

This isn’t one of those places where such accounts might be exaggerated; on the contrary, I suspect that we hear about less than what really happens.

There was a massacre there three years ago (bad) but there was an operation arresting more than a dozen alleged baddies a couple of weeks ago (good?). I don’t know if that means things are getting better.

I’m not sure if there’s anyone here who could give you first-hand information about how things have been lately. If it’s possible for you to visit there and talk to people (not only people connected with your potential employer), that might be the best way to get an idea.

Michoacan is a tremendously beautiful state. But I bet a large percentage of the people living there wish they could live elsewhere now. I'm not familiar with Los Reyes, violence is fairly concentrated and there are likely peaceful communities. But I've also heard that extortion is much wider spread than violence.

Like others, I would not live in, or travel to, anywhere in Michoacan right now. Even if you are in a peaceful area, you have to travel to and from that area and that might take you through places you don't want to go. I am in a similar situation in the state I live in. I live in a fairly remote rural area in northern Zacatecas, and not much happens here, it is generally quiet and peaceful, but Fresnillo, just a few hours away, is very violent, and to get pretty much anywhere else, I have to pass through there. I used to go to Fresnillo to shop at larger stores, but not anymore. Why risk it? Look elsewhere would be my advice.

I did a quick search this morning to see a bit more about what jobs were on offer in Los Reyes, Michoacan, and now I want to add that I especially would not go there for 6,000 pesos a month, even with free housing.

We have a small shack down in Chavinda, Michoacán, which is about 60km North of Los Reyes. We've been down a couple of times since the troubles kicked off, and had have no trouble on the car journeys (I always drive there), nor in the pueblo. There are various members of my 'political' family there too, who also report no trouble.
All that doesn't mean that all is good or all is bad, of course, as trouble can happen anywhere. I'd probably like there for a good salary, but otherwise I think I'd be happier in super-safe CDMX.

Look for a job in the automotive/aerospace triangle, there is a growing need for business English teachers. Lots of new international companies are moving here. This is a safe area to live. There is also a need for primaria and secondaria teachers at the private schools.

Queretaro, Salamanca, Leon, Guanajuato, Celaya, are all looking for business English teachers.
