Thank you

I used to hear quite a bit of griping from a teacher I knew that once taught there. He never had anything good to say about it except the fact that he couldn't wait until his contract was over. The apartments are old with its "healthy" supply of mold. It got worse when I think it was earlier this year that a toilet either exploded or the pipe to it simply burst and so the water just came gushing out in a fury. This of course led to more cockroaches in the building. I think they tried polishing up this incident by installing new windows and putting in new refrigerators.
The FAO (I think her name was Penny) offers very little if any help at all with things due to either indifference or just being clueless - perhaps a mix of them. Lies here and there abound quite frequently.

In short, avoid and just keep looking.

For the past two weeks there has been a piercing whistling sound in the pipes throughout the building. It isn't continuous but it does occur for several hours in the early morning and late evening. I can't sleep unless I have earplugs. Could this be a precursor to another toilet explosion?

You have been identified as a dissident. The government will jack up that piercing sound unless you desist. They can target you anywhere, anytime with their sonic rays. These stories usually end the same way, with the foreigner running towards the edge of some unfeasably tall building, clutching his ears like some latter-day incarnation of Munch's The Scream, before hurling himself eighty stories to his death. Relatives are billed for the clean-up.

I think you are on to something because the "whistling" has become worse. It's more piercing and occurs throughout the day and night.
I thought it was some kind of scientific experiment on us but your analysis was a real slap back to reality.
Smile

In addition to the above there is an Air Force base just nearby. Now the planes aren't flying 24/7 but days they do fly there are times it feels as if any building you are in (of either campus) is going to collapse. Couple the above with the fact that students can park their bikes just outside the teacher's apartment building without turning off their alarms. I have pretty powerful earplugs but when you combine all the above at once they aren't effective. If you ever see those movies where a person has their ears covered with their hands and screaming at the top of their lungs just to block out the noise and you're in to personally experiencing that kind of thing then welcome home!

There are few negative experiences expressed online... I applied out of curiosity last year or two years ago. They sent me the accommodation photos, it looked basic as hell and they claimed that "this type of accommodation is valued at 3000 RMB per month Laughing Laughing

Naturally, I showed no further interest.

Hahaha. I never understood why Teachers would accept garbage jobs like this.

Good idea. Better jobs will be posted over the next month or two. Finish professionally. Ask for a LOR on official overhead and move on.

Do your research buddy. With the new regulations, better schools may be willing to negotiate. And always be ready to move forward as soon as something doesn't feel right.

So many of these public Uni gigs paying 6-8 thou a month offer free 'western style apartment' as part of the package. Western style often means it has a sit down toilet where one can watch the mould grow while listening to the leaky pipes ....... Shocked

6-8 is fine for those with other priorities like studying Chinese, doing a Masters/ PhD, have a lot of privates to offset cost.

What gets me is that I have seen ads for that kind of pay for 18 hours or more per week. No way would I ever work that many hours for that kind of pay.

My knee-jerk reaction would be that NO rental accommodation in Jiaxing would be valued at/worth 3000 RMB per month.

Cool
