| I am currently negotiating with Jazan, and my monthly basic is around 10,075 SR with transportation and a yearly housing allowance of 18,000.(I am experienced) Based on the fact I have two other offers of 16,000 basic plus transportation and accommodation, I am asking if they can sweeten the deal. However, I would like to work as a linguistics professor rather than only as English teacher so I am persisting with Jazan. Problem is, I am ABD--All But Dissertation in the linguistics field and so not having the PhD in hand is a problem that restricts my pay. THe coordinators appear to like me and want to go to bat for me as I have peer reviewed publications and upcoming international presentations planned, and I have knowledge of diverse languages and language families. |

You better think twice about the Jazan area. First, for me they, Jazan University, tried breaking my contract before I even made it there.
Secondly, the Houthi militia attacked Jazan area last week and considering the war with Yemen is becoming more of a protracted war like Iraq, I would think twice. A couple of years ago the Saudis had to send National Guards troops to the Jazan area because of tribal fighting in Yemen that spilled over into Saudi Arabia.
Also the Houthis are attacking all major border crossing areas between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, probably in an effort to limit a ground invasion and as a basic form of revenge for the air assault.

He is referring to nationality.
A Bengali holding a US/UK passport would be paid higher than a Bengali with a Bengali passport. |

I recently got an offer at a different govt university. I am still 50/50 (weighing my options).
But the pay grade for instructors is the following
Base salary 4080+2040 per advanced degree (example b.a ma is 2040×2 ect) if your a native speaker +2040+350 for each year experience (5year cap of).
Example American m.a holder with 5 year experience is
4080+2040+2040+2040+1750=11,950 (500 driving also 17000 yearly housing)
Thats how I got it broken down!!! |

yeah but even African American and Pakistani bengali westerners make less than then their white country men.
at my Last gig in ksa. They preferred to hire African american and western bengalis western Pakistanis because they were afraid that the white teachers 1.want more money 2. More likely to pull a runner |

| 11,950 a month sounds low to me for a MA holder with 5 years of experience. 17,000 a year housing allowance is also pretty poor - even the shady contractors pay around 3000 riyals a month for that (or they put you in decent accommodation). |

I agree 100%. Alot of subcontractors pay more. But at the same time they only give 30 days vacation and 1 air ticket and usually you get a bigger work load. While govt university is 60 days off plus tickets for 3 dependents...... I suppose one just ways the pros and cons |

No, that's what was calculated based solely on your specific qualifications and experience. Keep in mind you're not receiving monetary credit for your online MA---that makes a big difference. Plus, only verified previous employment gets factored in. If you want the actual breakdown for how they determined your salary, ask the employer.

Pure generalization. That was the situation with the contracting company you worked at rather than a practice every KSA employer uses. But frankly, how would you know the recruiting criteria a company uses unless they stupidly disclosed such info to their workers. |

Well, workload might go either way. For a PYP program I worked on it was 15 hours a week. The second gig at a College of Excellence was more like 23 hours a week. Even proper university gigs would be at least 15 hours, I think.
The housing allowance at 17,000 riyals a year is terrible. Are you with your family? They should at least provide accommodation in my book. At my new university job accommodation is provided.
A recent College of Excellence position that was advertised was paying 55,000 USD with free accommodation and 52 days of holiday.. And, that was for BA + TEFL cert and three years of experience. |

| Jazan University does offer lower pay. A native speaker will get some type of double allowance that will bring you up to about nine thousand. You get a one-time furniture allowance. The Jazan offer I received is much lower than what I was offered for King Sau---16,000 as an experienced instructor with two Master's degrees and PhD candidacy.. However, the cost of living in Jazan is lower and people are very nice. It has a small-town feel. Jazan employs a lot of people from India, etc. And the environment of the universityseems to be very friendly and nice. However, they could not guarantee me that I would be teaching the linguistics classes I was originally promised, so I ended up not accepting their offer. At some time, however, I might follow up again and see if they are interested. |

Universities and agencies will (stupidly?) disclose such information if you ask for it.
The question 'On what have you based the salary offer of xxxxx?' usually does the trick.
Of course, you may need to formulate a more easily understood (and therefore less grammatically correct) question depending on who you ask. |

17000 is standard in government universities, and it is true that the colleges of excellence and most hiring companies pay way more in terms of housing allowance.
The 4080 basic is also standard for BA holders, but normally they double it, it is called exceptional allowance. So one starts at 8160 basic. Then you add the years of experience post degree. And 500 transportation.
However, you need to remember that the vacation days are wayyy more at govt unis. Like this year, it is almost 3 months. Plus all the national holidays during the year, which, at colleges of excellence, they do not always get (students are on holiday but staff need to show up).
You get 25000 education allowance. You also get free medical (not medical insurance). Usually the work load is less in gvt unis.
I think it is about quality of life, particularly if you are a woman and have kids. Colleges of excellence work you to the bone. As a wife and mother who still needs to go home and take care of the house/kids/hubby, it's tough. Even if the hubby shares the chores. |
