"Don't Leave "Home" Without It"

I personally know a lot of teachers permanently leaving their KSA employment this year. Reasons aren't important...they range from age (in the 70s in a few cases) to outright incompetence to simple voluntary quits for a variety of reasons.

The question always arises as to which KSA documents should soon-to-be ex-employees take with them, if any.

(Remember, once out of the Kingdom, documents are nearly impossible to retrieve. Once you leave for good, it's like you were never here.....worse, it's like you never existed....think a "friend" will run around for you getting things you "forgot"?.........Keep dreaming.)

At one time, (up to year 2000), you were given a Letter of Release/Letter of No Objection automatically upon departure (assuming you finished your contract). But for the last 15 years of so, things haven't been so clear cut. Now you usually have to ask for them and very often, employees are told these letters are no longer issued and so forth.

One document I strongly urge you to get is what is called a SERVICE CERTIFICATE. In many cases, these could be used, in the future, as a testimony of time spent in KSA, they show what job you did and that you left in good standing (or something like that). They could also possibly be used as substitute Letters of No Objection in the future (even if not called that).

The amendments to the Saudi Labour (Royal Decree No. M/46 of 05/06/1436) were published in the official gazette No. 4563 dated 24 April 2015.

"On termination employers are currently required, on request, to provide a service certificate (free of charge) which sets out details of the employee's employment (date of joining and leaving, salary details and profession). Employers are now expressly prohibited from including anything in this certificate that may be harmful to the employee's reputation or may 'reduce his employment opportunities'. Previously, this could be included in the certificate if the employer included reasons for the same."

A friend wouldn't be able to help you. You're beyond help at that point.

In the United States and most likely the West, this is either labor law, or the company would immediately get the crap sued out of them upon the employee finding out about the bad reference, and in the end the US company would have to pay out, or the sheriff would come and start collecting assets for auction. The court summons issued to the company would not be a suggestion either, but enforceable by law. The Saudis lack this kind of labor component solely due to stupidity. Most of their lack of ethics is just plain due to stupidity.

Naw. Mostly, it's due to a witch's brew of ignorance & arrogance.

It doesn't rise to the lofty heights of "stupidity".
