This made me smile
(note on holidays in regard to a Science teaching position, the school is also called 'OK Foreign Language School', so ok then)
Re holidays, foreign teachers have all Chinese public holidays with payment. About the summer and winter vacation, there is no summer vacation but 14 days (2 weeks) winter vacation with
payment. Actually, the teacher can have the whole summer and winter vacation if they like, but there is no payment.
We are an honest school and we are frank to candidates. If you are interested in the position, please let me know. |

I like it. Thanks for sharing. Western manager? Walk-the-walk science teachers are hard to find in China. I am thinking it would help them, though a fair amount of these positions still offer paid vacations, and in that event would hurt them unless salary and other benefits outweighed what they offer. |

Chinese, I presume, and it will hurt them I reckon...
A lot of schools seem to offer an initial 10 month (Sept-June) contract. Then if they decide to try and re-sign the FT for another year, will offer a 12 month contract with summer pay.
I certainly wouldn't work in a full time teaching job without paid vacations. |

There are quite a few red-flags in there. But then again, it is a training school. I think that you could do much much better than 12,000RMB for 80 hours a month. That's 150 yuan a class.. not that great. Especially considering that the tuition they pay is gigantic, very likely in the range of 50,000 - 100,000 RMB a year. And they have 30 kids per class. You do the math on that one.
I believe that since you are a science teacher you could make considerably more than the average English teacher. You are the golden goose for teachers in China. Don't sell yourself for anything less. Aim for the 20,000 RMB per month minimum, and try to avoid training schools at all costs. Those stepping stones are just that, stepping stones. They are the 7/11 and McDonalds jobs when it comes to English teaching. Not worthy of making a career out of it. Not worth the hassle of dealing with incompetence/lack of respect for a year or two, and all for a highway robbery-like pay. |

Hey Markness,
I am quite happy at the public school where I currently teach Science and have recently commited to a third year. I just posted this for fun but your advice is appreciated none the less. Totally agree, one of the reasons that I moved here was to avoid such an environment that a language mill or training school could well provide!
I am not on 20K monthly salary but taking the overall package into account (rent allowance, annual airfare, full winter/summer pay, etc.), it could work out at more (haven't done the math)
Cheers,
