The Vietnam visa websites state that on June 30th this year the free tourist visa (for 14 days, for UK citizens) is set to expire. Has anyone on the ground there heard/read whether this is certain, or whether there will be an extension?

I've heard a few people talking about this as well. I guess the UK is getting too chummy with China, so the Vietnamese aren't making things any easier for you all. Meanwhile, Obama visits Vietnam and Americans get 1 year tourist visas.

Not really a problem for me. UK has been too eager to score brownie points with China though they have been opposing China in the South China Sea issue. So maybe that is the root of this.

More likely is it hasn't garnered a significant increase in UK tourists spending big money. Brit tourists are mean and don't want to spend their £s.

I guess they'd rather have the fees than give out free 14 day visas on landing.

The change for Americans and the VN visas has been in the works for a while, due to reciprocity.

Obama's (then pending visit) and the lifting of the arms embargo and TTP may have expedited the final decision.
Absolutely correct. It is important to remember that the TPP is signed but not ratified. If you are a US citizen, you should email your senator in support of ratification. Clinton has said that she is now against the TPP but she will be back on board if elected.

Of course, you should not be working on a tourist visa but we know how that is.

The TTP is not related to the recent reciprocal visa decision for Americans by the VN authorities.

This issue has been advocated by the US govt/state dept for quite sometime.

The visa decision by VN has already been made. A friend of mine got a one-year multiple a couple of weeks ago.
There is no need to hash this out now. If the TPP is not ratified, which is a distinct possibility, let's revisit this to see if the one-year visa does not go away soon after. Everyone knows how quickly Vietnamese visa rules can change.

So, I guess people from the UK (and the other European countries currently allowed the free 14-day visa) will have to wait till July 1st to find out if there's an extension...?

Interesting, where are your sources from the relevant department of tourism in Vietnam to back that up, or elsewhere? Generalizing much? On my connecting flight from HK thru Hanoi, almost all sat near me where retired Brit tourists, and I guess all had been spending money on food, hotels, beer, souvenirs etc etc.....I don't see how you can travel in another country, even on a package holiday, and NOT spend dollars/euros/pounds etc.

Have a look at these:

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/vietnam/entry-requirements

http://vietnamembassy.org.uk/index.php?action=p&ct=Notice3

It seems that there is no more 15 day free tourist visa for Brits.

I want to know - how do you go about getting more than 30-days?? Do some Brits continually fly in and out of Vietnam getting 30-day express service tourist visas??

Vietnam extends visa waiver for five European countries

http://tuoitrenews.vn/business/35653/vietnam-extends-visa-waiver-for-five-european-countries

"German, French, British, Italian, and Spanish visitors will continue to be able to enjoy a visa-free travel policy that allows for a 15-day stay for each entry for a year ending July 30, 2017..."

"The Vietnamese government has agreed [to] an extension for the program, but rejected a proposal to increase the validity and allowed stays for the policy."

What I want to know then is:

1) Do you just need to border hop to activate the 15-day exemption?

2) How many 15 day visa exemptions can you get back to back?

3) Does it interfere with you getting a proper visa/ applying for a work permit in any way?
