Hello all,

I will either be taking the TEFL course at ITTO or the CELTA at Playa del Carmen some time next year. I am in the process of paying off debts and saving enough money to take one of these courses.

My main question is for all graduates of a TEFL program out there: on average, how long does it take to secure a teaching position after finishing the course? Is there help during the course in looking for a job or does the job search begin only after the course is finished?

I am trying to gauge how much money I need to save in order to survive during and after the course is over.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered!

Craig aka dude72

Very Happy

It's been quite a while since I've had to be concerned about such things, but I'd say in the neighborhood of USD$2,000 would be a safe amount to have available after the course is finished. Unless you get a job in the same city where you do the course, you'll have traveling expenses . . . maybe to more than one city if the first place you go isn't satisfactory. Your settling-in expenses can vary a lot depending on what type of housing is available. Most schools don't cover the cost of a work visa, so that's usually another expense. Also, with some schools it takes a while for the pay checks to start for newly hired teachers. You may not need to use all of the $2,000, but I think it's a safe estimate in order to avoid the risk of cutting yourself short on funds.
