Hi Guys,

I've been looking up some jobs online and I have noticed a lot based in Hanoi but not near as many in HCM.

Any reasons why? Or is it just that Hanoi has a bigger market for teachers.

I'm curious.

Hanoi pays more, but the quality of life there is much lower than anywhere else in Vietnam. Perhaps that's why they do so much advertising online, because most people who sign on for a year there either don't make it all the way through or quickly move on after a year.

Saigon is a much more attractive place to live. Better weather, friendlier people, 2 hours from the beach, and literally more ESL jobs than you'll know what to do with. They probably don't have to advertise quite as much online, as they get dozens of walk-ins or local emails each week.

I've been in Hanoi several years.

Some things I've witnessed myself and discussed with others here is that:

There are a larger number of people coming here to compete for teaching positions. There has been downward pressure on wages for some time. I expect wages to decline further.

To save money to return to home-country or old age, you almost always have to work 2 or 3 jobs, and this is even for those that work nights at that 'popular' language school operating now.

The only exception to the 2-3 part-time jobs are the bilingual schools which want you there M-F all day (and even then you have to watch your budget if you want to save something.

I understand, not everyone wants to or cares about saving, but you need to have something.
