| What are you doing in China looking at jobs paying 6000RMB when you have to pay £300 back to the UK each month? Can't you get a job in the UK for £600 a month? Why go all the way over there for such a low income? The flight will set you back £500. There are jobs going in China paying up to 20,000RMB per month I think, although I've never been there. Why not look for a much higher paying job? Forget China if that's all they pay! |

| I've just noticed you say you don't have TEFL certification. You need a degree and TEFL/CELTA to get a Z-visa for china I think. Do you have a degree? Why don't you do a CELTA in the UK first and then look for jobs in china? |

If you want a 20,000/month position, you usually need to be in China with all of your documents in order first. Very few schools are willing to offer this to someone overseas who they can't even interview in person. Also, Anhui is the poorest part of China. That's where all of the cheap laborers in Shanghai come from. I doubt that they will have many high-paying jobs in Bengbu. |

| I taught in Fuyang Teachers College, Anhui for two years. Fuyang quite backward city, but very friendly and certainly very cheap to live in. One McDonalds, a couple KFCs and one Walmart, Darunfa Taiwanese chain store etc. Lotta spitting and pollution, stray dogs etc. But quite liveable! I didn't spend much time in Bengbu but obvious it is a way richer and better developed option than Fuyang! High-speed train station on main Shanghai line, clean and neat city. |

1. More about Anhui/Bengbu - what’s it like? It seems like a good option for travelling around China, whenever I have a free moment at least! I don't think there's a big expat community though (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)
2. The opportunities for learning Mandarin. I'm currently revising ahead of the HSK2 test later this summer, and would like to leave China next year with some strong language skills. My concern is, though, that I'll be spending most of my time talking in English. Has anyone built good Mandarin skills in these roles?
3. What should I expect or be aware of? And what should I be worried about? From reading the forums, everything from pollution to hepatitis. Grateful for any guidance here!
4. What I need to know before signing. In particular, is 6,000RMB sufficient to live-on each month (with free accommodation)? I'm not expecting luxury, but it would be nice to travel occasionally. On a personal note, I have a £300 monthly commitment in the UK that I can't postpone. This reduces my monthly income to around 3,000RMB. Is it still doable? Or should I forget about this opportunity? Also, how do you get paid? Is it into a UK bank account? |
Lots of ink about traveling, studying Mandarin, health, and the dosh, but nothing specifically about teaching in particular and what it could take to run smooth classes? No disrespect meant, but I find that glaring omission to be odd.
While all of the above are indeed important to learn more about, it could behoove you to get some more info about the classes and students you could teach as well: what grade level? Majors? Non-majors? Large classes? Small classes? Oral English? Writing? And so on.
Good luck with it! Anhui could be interesting.

The aforementioned quote--not particularly helpful
