I appreciate that to some it may seem somewhat counter-intuitive, but I have decided to cast my native english bread on the waters in Athens this month. More particularly, I am inclined to look for paid work teaching english, probably in the vicinity of 'entry-level', at a frontisterio in Athens. I would appreciate some comment from TEFLers in the field as to the going rates of pay, netto or gross, and whether it is customary for accommodation to be thrown into the bargain, as it were. I am a UK citizen.

As you may have guessed, Greece is not a hot spot for EFL teachers, given the long-term economic crisis. I will be surprised if you get many useful responses.

I work with one Greek colleague (who teaches in Greece) who notes that pay rates are generally subsistence level at best, that at entry level one might well be hard pressed to subsist solely on EFL pay, and that accommodation is not typically included in contracts. However, you might find something that does not fit this particular generalization on the topic.

Greek teachers have an extended family and kinship network, as well as friends who can help out in hard times. A foreigner teaching English is a wage-slave with nothing but the pittance he receives for selling his labour-power.
