I was in Surabaya last year, its better in terms of traffic, and getting around the city than Jakarta and is more affordable but its quite boring in my opinion.

"Modern" Indonesian cities are pretty standardized anyway, characterless suburbs, the center of life becomes a Mall, and entertainment typical Western mainstream with the latest Hollywood Movies and KFC.

If you like that kind of work to suburb to Mall to Junk food places lifestyle then it sounds like a pretty good offer otherwise you can really earn the same money elsewhere and in a much more exotic atmosphere.

However one advantage of Surabaya is that traveling outside the city is quite easy and weekends don't need to be spent carrying the shopping bags for your local girlfriend/wife or trolling the Malls that dominate the city.

By the way Surabaya is hotter than most cities on Java so you might need air conditioning in your accommodation.
