I keep hearing untold BS
This Z visa process is a labyrinth
Nobody seems to know - even those who are supposed to know
I need to know
(a) I'm from the UK - do I need to go back to the UK to apply or can it be done through HK or a consulate in a third country (the job I've been offered is in Beijing)?
(b) degree authentication must be done in your home country?

(a) You most likely need to return home, or have an agent in the UK process the application. SAFEA in Beijing will issue a document called a work permit that allows you to apply for a Z visa. This document specifies where you need to apply. When you get this, you will have your answer.
(b) Of course. |

You have been told different stories because it depends on the province and the employer. I, for example, was able to get my Z visa in Vietnam last year. However, you'll read plenty of stories on this website about those needing to return to their home country. |

I'm Australian, my wife is American. We are both presently in Australia. My wife is not an Australian resident, but rather is in the country on a tourist visa.
We were told by our soon to be employer in Zhejiang province that my wife could not apply for her Z visa in Australia and so needed to return to the US. This was due to her not being an Australian resident.
The consulate here in Australia DID process my wife's visa. Thank God we didn't listen to our employer.

BTW, my wife's invitation letter did specify a consulate in America, but the consulate in Australia clearly didn't give a sh#t.

Contact the appropriate Chinese consulate which would be the Chinese consulate in whichever city/ country you are in at present.
Shanghai Noon and Brunouno are telling you the way it is/might be depending upon where you have established overseas residency.
If you are exasperated at this point, just wait until you arrive in China. |

The problem is that different Foreign Expert Offices will apply different rules in different ways, and to compound this different consulates will also have their own interpretations. YOU NEED TO CHECK WITH YOUR CONSULATE.
Normally what requires you to go home is the degree authentication - assuming home is where you got your degree. This requires a notary public to sign it, followed by your country's Foreign Affairs office for your area. Consulates say they will only process an authentication that is done within their region, so it HAS to be done at home.
If you have family or friends who will do this for you and mail you the authentication documents then you're good. You don't have to go home.
It is up to you to tell your employer or whoever is applying to the agency giving you your invitation letter to NOMINATE which country's consulate you will make your application for the Z visa. Once that letter is issued wherever it says you will apply - that's it - it's the only place you can apply and there's no changing it.
In my province - we have the option to nominate this, but I hear so many stories of people who are compelled to go home for this it makes me wonder if other provinces don't. Either that or those employers just don't know about it, or aren't organised enough to give their new teachers the option. |

Does this mean that a Chinese employer can tell a newly arriving foreigner to wait and apply for their visa upon arriving in China? |

There's a parallel thread on this. Poster has been told that he/she can process a Z at immigration in Shenzhen. Just front with the invitation letter.
Doesn't pass my smell test but there you go. |

Strangely enough I got my Z visa docs with 'any applicable consulate' written on the top, presumably I could have been in Timbuktu and got it there. |

The people who sponsored the Z don't have an answer for you? And you are going to trust them to pay you on time and take care of you...? |
