Hey all - I applied for a position through bamboolearning.com - has anyone had any experience with this agency? The position is for an English teacher at Tangwai School, a boarding school for primary through high school students in Chengdu. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated - trying to make a decision on jobs this week!!

Hi,

First things first, do you live in Chengdu right now? If so, avoid using a recruiter and use a website like www.echinacities.com to find a job, as usually they don't have recruiters on there (except for training schools).

Secondly, if you are not living in Chengdu then a recruiter is okay to use I suppose, but I would advise bailing as soon as you can because recruiters don't work for free. They land you the gig and then they stick on you like a mosquito for a year taking money off of your paycheck without telling you (thus why you want to avoid using them).

Thirdly, I think I have a recruiter in Chengdu that I can send you their info via a PM, and they take a 1-time payment for doing it, so if you need someone who I know I can trust and recommend then contact me. I just have never heard of the recruiting company you are inquiring about.

edit: the way I worded it I made it sound like they ask to be paid to actually search for the job, that is not the case, once she finds the job for you and you are all settled in and working I think the first pay-check gets docked a bit and she takes her comission like that. The Chinese recruiters don't tell you anything and when you ask them why your salary is as low as a road-cleaner they'll claim "oh, that's just normal! heh heh heh!", with their stupid-looking smiles. I have a couple of friends who swear by using recruiters but they make half as much as I do for the same amount, if not more work than I do. It is not a golden unicorn job I have, it is simply one that did not require a recruiter.

second edit: my friend works out of Beijing, but has jobs available everywhere in China, sorry that I said only jobs available in Chengdu. I'll need more information.

Huh, if you mean training schools spamming their jobs everyday then sure you can consider those agencies. Some how I have found a few jobs magically there with the "90 percent agencies LOL" rating. Much safer hunting there then knowingly giving up a chunk of your paycheck to a "reliable" recruiter.

Heck, I don't even know why I am replying, you didn't even offer a better alternative, genius.
