For the better uni jobs, the rule of thumb seems to be to cover 2/3 of the cost for a decent place. Sometimes they will offer subsidized housing on or near campus in lieu of an allowance. Typically, free housing is going to be low-quality, so do you research beforehand if they offer this. For example, the 3300 allowance at XJTLU, if you were to only use this amount (and effectively have 'free' housing), it would be of a low standard. You will save, but it won't be pleasant.

I think part of it stems from the fact that Chinese are used to sharing/and or poorer housing conditions.

Ie in college they share 8-10 in a room, but at my university it was one room per person.

Maybe that extends. 'A Chinese might take 3300 and then share a house with 3-4 others and only spend 1500 and save the rest.

I thought along with Ningbo Nottingham (Nitt wit ton) Mong ing ton, that this was a scam outfit to be avoided at all costs, and was on a blacklist?

Definitely not a scam outfit. Anyway, it's a decent job for many I'd say. The vacay is low, but the pay is good. The city and climate are not so good. Housing in the private market is decent. Students are good enough, but the marking load can be high. If you're at top pay, you could save quite a bit. Americans though should be cautious due to an ongoing yuan devaluation against the dollar. Brits are probably fine, especially after Brexit.
