I am surprised by two things... I thought they only hire for Sept 1 and the visa wont be ready for that date is applying today.
They are now interviewing in London and Dubai. Thats a first!
Anyway, if you work there, 3 hrs of classes a day, 1 hr in the office... 24 weeks of the year but only 60 days out. |

If KAU's recruiters are hitting Dubai, it might be because they hope to snag some of those UAE teachers who are about to lose their contracts due to the looming phase out of the government English foundation year programs.
Anyway, it's not unusual for direct-hire opportunities to open up mid year. |

These guys regularly recruit. They are a mid-tier outfit, not exactly in Jeddah proper. The money and conditions are ok, and you can save. Abu Dhabi or Dubai is still a lot better, but of course you gotta find a decent job there first. And that's getting tougher to do. As to their specific recruiting agenda, one can take an educated guess as above, but it's hard to say for sure. Maybe they didn't get enough interest at TESOL Arabia - Or did they even go? Perhaps some applicants backed out? Enrollments went up? But definitely worth a look, especially if you don't mind being in that part of the world. |

What is mid-tier? and the money is better than most.
The guys I met in Jeddah were headed to Qatar and the UAE, not the other way. Only the very dedicated brothers left the UAE for Jed. |

Not anymore in terms of the Emirates. You apparently haven't been following the UAE forum. See Foundation year to be or not to be. Hiring at two of the three state universities is down to zilch; HCT is the hold out with lousy, shorter contracts and a lousier, toxic work environment. |

Pay and benefits are decent. Conditions aren't bad either. But the location is not great. In other words, you could do better, but you could also do worse. So if you meet most of their requirements and don't mind living over there, you should have a pretty good chance of getting hired. It would be a way to gain experience in the ME without too much stress I suppose, but with the plan to transition to the UAE hopefully within a year or two. |

|
|
Hello All,
Could someone who has worked at the KAU ELI tell me if it is located in downtown Jeddah, or far to the north of the city, like the UJ's ELI? Also, in addition to the 60 days summer holiday, do KAU ELI instructors get a mid-semester break and a spring break as the students do?
Many thanks in advance! |

UJ is not north of Jed but rather in northern Jed, which is the best part of the city. |

Thank you NS for pointing out that the term breaks are included. I don't think the ad on Tefl.com mentioned that fact, but if it did, I overlooked it. Must be age-related reading regression.
Thank you Hatcher for the location info. Though I've spent ten years in Dhahran and another ten in Riyadh, I am completely unfamiliar with Jeddah. On Google Maps, the institute's location appears to be quite some distance from the downtown area. In fact, it appears to be 75 or 80 km out. If it, as you say, is in Jeddah and if the northern part of Jeddah is desirable for a family, that will set my mind at ease. I just didn't want to tell my wife that we were moving to the boonies and that she'd have nothing to do and nowhere to go. After four decades of marriage, I harbor no illusions about who wears the pants in my house. |

I doubt you got married when you were in your early teens, but be aware KSA's retirement age is 60. Recruiters tend to reject CVs of applicants who are nearing that age. Don't let that keep you from applying, but you need to be realistic about your chances. |

No, we were both eighteen when we tied the knot. It's not quite four decades, however. It's three decades, nine years and eight months. The first three years were absolute bliss while the balance have been a never-ending cascade of honey-do lists.
Thanks for letting me know the retirement age, but after 20 years here, I am well aware of it. |

However, it's important to be aware that that doesn't mean you HAVE TO LEAVE your job at age 60.
According to usual and customary practices in KSA, if you're working in KSA and reach the age of 60 on the job, you employer can extend your work contract "indefinitely". That's why it's not uncommon to see expats aged 60+++ working in KSA. You generally can't get hired at age 60 (although there are many exceptions), but if you're already an employee, you can be kept on beyond the age of 60 as long as the employer wants.
A most enlightened policy, I might add, in contrast with practices in the West where it's out you go at a certain age, period. A very seldom mentioned benefit of working in KSA. |

The original KAU had 5 campuses including what is now UJ. Another campus is an hour north of Jed. UJ is certainly in Jed and in a much better part of the city than the main campus. |
