How many times do these clowns mention "REMINDER: AMERICAN NATIVE SPEAKER MALES ONLY PLEASE" ...As if they are speaking to children. It just shows what they think of EFL teachers. Don't even get me started on the pay and zero holiday pay. Lol

Based on the posts that we get regularly here, I would suggest that this is likely necessary to avoid having to deal with applications from non-Americans, non-native speakers, and women.
The job list isn't just read by those of us with Middle East experience, you know... newbies to the field rarely know about the issues.
(they will also be unaware as yet about the drop in pay and benefits. LOL)

To The OP,
I have a colleague who used to work for them in Arar at their mining school two years ago and he was earning US$3,500/Monthly teaching for them. He was not American but South African and was on a multiple business visa for one year. The huge drop of pay is not worth it as this is also a hardship posting near the Iraqi border... |

Regarding that advert, for those with only a bachelor's degree and a TEFL cert. and who are new to the industry and in debt, the job has merit. For one thing it's only 10 months (safe length for newbies), plus accommodation isn't shared, and the multi-exit visa seems ideal with no iqama and money paid directly to one's US account (so it would seem). But the major drawback here is they also require business attire, and the pay is very low. That said, at least their requirements are more or less in line with the pay. Just get in, get out, put something on the resume, pay some debts, and don't look back...or do! and stay awhile as some most certainly will |

In line with the above, pay is clearly dropping. This is the first I've seen a salary so low for native speakers in Saudi. And with this pay drop, maybe they are deliberately aiming to attract the lowest-cost western teachers they can find, which may very well be the 'shape of things to come'. |

Every Arab set up requires professional attire, for what would the Arabs be if they didn't wear business suits or at the very least dress pants, shirt and tie? There's nothing else they can think about when it comes to education. As for the low pay Middle East pay is going down and will continue to go down as the Middle East economy collapses. |

This is spot on the more I think about it. But I think it is also a control mechanism for their teacher slaves to make them conform and show their 'deep' commitment to the cause. For what would a teacher be without his/her attire. |

What does anyone know about American Academy? and they really are close to Iraq border.

First I've heard of them, but as long as it's a business visa (preferable for newbies on short contracts), the money is going directly into your US account, and you have your own private apartment, then you should be ok. It is only 10 months, so most can survive that. You should be able to save 70% of that salary without feeling too miserable. Take a couple small trips around Saudi when possible, do your time, and then upgrade jobs if you can. From here it looks like the job is decent for someone with minimal quals (and who doesn't mind the dress code), but you will know more after you chat with them. If you contact them, you could be in Saudi in less than a month! I would request Dhahran/Damman (advert says 'various cities') if they have it so you can at least head over to Bahrain on the weekends. Be advised, however, that too much Bahrain can easily go through a good amount of that salary. |

What is it with the shirt and tie?
Never known a job where I've not had to where one.
It's pretty normal. |

Check out this advert from American Academy just 9 months ago when salaries were $3200/mo. Salaries have dropped significantly to $2500 or so. Oil revenues must be terrible.

And by the way, it looks like these guys are going to put their guys in Arar near Iraq, so don't get your hopes up for Dhahran or Dammam. Hardship posting? Oh yes, but there will be plenty of camels to see!
Also, it looks like they did away with the "Casual Business attire" phrasing for the new advert. Probably had guys dressing all sorts of silly ways.
Looks like they did away with the free breakfast and lunch too!
Also, you should verify what kind of medical insurance you are getting because it looks like catastrophic coverage only - 'in the event of mishap'.

If you haven't noticed, the global economy has been slowing down --- wage growth generally has been declining the world over, including back home. The oil-rich Gulf is no exception (despite many westerners' skewed perceptions of streets paved with gold and government coffers overflowing with money to be gemerously handed to eager expat EFL teachers). |
