I like how they use the word "Tribunal". Liberty Egalite Fraternite It really would be obnoxious going to the beach and seeing people in the water with full clothing on, simply because their religion doesn't allow them to wear a proper bathing suit. Actually though the reason for the ban does not concern improper swimming attire, but that they might be carrying something underneath the clothing.
The other day I was in a group that arrived at an Indonesian Independence day picnic. One of my colleagues introduced himself to a woman in a hijab and reached out to shake her hand, like he had done to everyone else. She backed up and turned her arm away. 10 minutes later when I was introducing myself to a group of Indonesians that she was a part of, she basically snapped back "we've met". This is the kind of stuff that people really don't like. |

I believe this ban is an unfortunate overreach and will be reversed. But I also believe French policy makers genuinely engage the culture clash of Muslims and secular societies by better terms than many/most other western countries. |
