Latest desperate stunt requires compulsory insurance for UK citizens...

https://www.saudiarabiavisa.co.uk/embassy-of-saudi-arabia-visa-travel-insurance-policy-requirement.html

"As of the 20th June 2016, the Saudi embassy now require every applicant to purchase travel insurance via one of their approved suppliers, which is integrated into the payment solution during the creation of the enjaz."

Alongside the screenshot provided, there are options ranging from $21 to $130 with the statement:

"Please note that that Kingdom of Saudi Arabia require different insurance policies to be purchased based on the travel requirements (length, number of entries) etc and the price is created based on their own algorithm during our enjaz creation."

I would imagine that the algorithm will magically throw up $130 each and every time.

I suspect they're referring to visas for Hajj and Umra as well as a basic visit visa.

Most visitors to KSA are pilgrims. I think this provision applies to them.

The number of teachers headed there is tiny compared to the huge numbers headed for Hajj or Umrah.

Procedures for getting there are certainly more complex than they used to be. In 1970 I went to the Cultural Bureau and they stamped an entry visa in my passport. That was it.
