And "stinky Pakistani taxis" isn't deliberately provocative? It is certainly racist. Perhaps you needed to consider the housing and lack of water in the slave quarters where these workers are forced to live.

I may be in a minority but I refuse to join this "Fordist" cult which puts the internal combustion engine at the centre of our lives.

I preferred getting around Jeddah via magic flying carpet myself... Wink
It was also how many of my female students said they'd like to travel.

I detest the use of the word "sarnie". It is an attempt to render a substandard dialectal variation for "sandwich" respectable.. More appropriate for the unspeakable BBC Radio 2 than for a forum like this !

Civilised folk in any case eat bacon rolls.

Yes you may. I presume you travel by plane, ship, taxi, when need must, so why the hatred for the car?

I always thought prejudice was discrimination for no reason.

But I have to say, that a large proportion of Pakistani taxis, which were interestingly enough, the safest option in Riyadh, compared to the Saudi taxis, were quite often the smelliest taxis at the same time.
A Saudi taxi would often smell very nice, what with the oud and such. Racist or realist?

You decide?

And the idea that anyone doesn't have access to running water in a city life Riyadh, is laughable. And yes, I have been to poor areas. Areas where some of our knowledgeable western women, without doubt, wouldn't like to venture.

I do not hate the automobile. I refuse to make it central to my life. In some societies, the car had become the dominant life-form !

Fordism is BAD !

I can't actually believe all the folk who have lived in Saudi without a car! Have you not enjoyed the greasy Kabsa drive-through experience? And how do ever cat-call the silky-sheikhas hanging on the corner of the hyper-malls? Oh man...what about the sand-drifting and street races with your shemagh on back-to-front? Even worse...how do your store your chilled non-alcoholic beer back from LuLus?? Just the thought of your deprivation kills me. Yala habibi
