Is there anyone PRESENTLY LIVING IN CHINA who can attest FIRST HAND to the proposal that a z visa can be procured in Shanghai?
It would be interesting to see a scan of the initial visa of entry then the ensuing Z visa. |
That is an interesting request.
It seems that if you had your paperwork at the ready you could arrive with no visa. Haha! It is done right at the port of entry. If you arrive with another valid visa, you can apply for the residence permit directly inside Shanghai.
Considering that Shanghai is part of the new 144 hour transit visa zone, I would personally arrive with my z-visa paperwork ready, a fake airline ticket to a Third country, and a printout of the transit visa policy to protect my butt with the airlines and immigration.
It would be nice to know exactly what occurs when one arrives at the Shanghai port of entry. "Ni hao! I am here for my z-visa." |
Again... I had a 10 year multi-entry tourist VISA (acquired in 3 days and reimbursed by the school). So did colleagues. So when arriving through immigration no one said anything. However after getting here the paperwork started to apply for a Z visa. Mine is processing, my colleagues have theirs completed. I don't think you could have a transit VISA switched because that would expire while you are waiting on paperwork.
Again, I think most people got theirs before hand and I don't recommend doing it this way if you dont have to. Its only feasible to do it here if you are on a time crunch because say you didn't understand which documents you needed or lied about your documents/didn't have them all you'd be in trouble. |

Again...we are indeed talking about arriving without a valid visa and obtaining the z-visa upon arrival. It is indeed different from the route that most seem to have taken for Shanghai since the change, including yourself.
Whether it would be wise to take this route or not remains to be seen. However, if it is indeed available I personally would go this route (with the transit visa back-up) as it is the least costly way to do so in terms of time and expense. It can be a major headache to even obtain a tourist visa now, especially if you are outside your home country. This is the entire reason why you are seeing the transit visas pop up. Moreover, a fair amount of schools will not reimburse for an initial L visa.
Did your L visa get cancelled? I believe it is 10 years with a maximum of 60 days per year? We Yankees only need apply at this time. |

Yeah I wouldn't recommend it, especially if your school won't pay. Tourist VISAS are not cheap.
Yeah my VISA is for 10 years with a 60 day max at a time (not for the year that I know of). Its not cancelled yet but it will be as they said I can't have 2 VISAS at once. |
