Hi folks

(Edited this to avoid too much information.)
Looking for some advice about moving to Mongolia to work as an ESL teacher.
I have been out of teaching for two years. So can anyone living there or who has been, anyone else with any thoughts on the subject tell me about the teaching, renting/housing, social life in the area.

I have a CELTA/TEFL, first degree, BTEC in Education, Full DBS and from the UK. In previous years taught in Far East including China, Taiwan (does anyone think China and or Taiwan is better)? Preferably no split shifts.

I was in China for 7 years, never made it to Mongolia but did look into it. From what I have read many of the outfits there are untrustworthy, doesn't look like a good place to work. Also, you would likely work in Ulan Bator, where the air pollution is bad:

Things are no better than when you inquired 3 years ago. You'd think with fewer expat teachers around (a lot of expats have left as it has become very difficult to make a living) and lower rents it would be easier to find jobs, but the fact is with the economy firmly stuck in the outhouse and a socialist-learning government in power, salaries are down and legit jobs (with a school that will actually treat its teachers with some respect and/or pay what was promised) are scarce.

If you've saved up enough to live on while earning no more than a token allowance in Mongolia, and don't mind rising xenophobia and air pollution, come on over and satisfy your curiosity. Avoid the schools criticized in this forum, though -- they're still notorious for ill-treating their teachers and will ruin your experience here.

Are you still thinking of a job outside UB? There are ESL jobs available in the secondary city of Darhan and in a few small rural towns. The schools outside UB are more likely to provide free housing but the salary is risible. To get these jobs, it's easiest to already be in UB and join an expats' FB group so you don't miss out on vacancy announcements.

Here's an excellent account and update on a for-profit school which also operates as an "international" school in Ulaanbaatar. It squares with (and gives insight to) what the school's ex-teachers have been saying on Dave's and places like Glassdoor.

Thanks for the replies all. A while since i looked at thread. I think i would have to satisfy my curiosity and come over, but as i mentioned on another thread i am now in council accommodation in UK and have to face the choice of giving it up or continue renting it while away.
