Will you go over 20 contact hours pw?
I've had late starting classes before and they seemed to be less able students who didn't get in on the regular Gao Kao exam results.
Be interested in how it turns out.
How is Wuhan? People tell me it's the next big place. Sister city to Manchester UK |

This gig seems very good IMO because i get paid for each extra period over 16 periods in the contract.
I teach Oral, Listening and Business English this semester. I'm alone here again this semester whereas 2 semesters ago there were 3 of us (2 Americans and 1 kiwi) but even then all three of us were all doing extra classes anyway.
The freshman always get slotted in late because of their military training so that situation is standard it seems.
I don't rate Wuhan at all to be honest. It has poor air (summers not too bad though) and it takes forever to get to the airport and around town although the Metro system is expanding rapidly is is pretty good overall too. |

Yeah forgot the military weeks for freshers at unis. Been at vocationals which don't seem to have that requirement. Although my first gig in 04 was uni and had weekly flag raising in uniform which kids hated
Kiwi?
Me too.

Not so happy doing 20 times 40 minute classes at Uni level-mostly writing as well so quite big grading workload....all for 7500 per month after tax.. |

Small world, I'm in Wuhan too. Only been here 3 weeks though I much prefer it to other cities in China.
It's not a bad city from what I've seen, lots of stuff to do, lots of expats if that's your thing, relatively low cost of living. Horrendous traffic though.
Maybe my opinion will change later, but for now I really like the city. |

Check out Online Writing Lab (www.OWL) for handouts. It's a godsend for writing teachers in China as well everywhere in the western world. It describes and gives samples for several types of narratives and arguments. The website is Purdue university's.

| It was the marking that drove me insane. |

| I teach 4 50-min lessons on each of Mon, We'd, Fri. Basically, Tues and Thurs are at our discretion, and have to do ten office hours min a week. Lots of marking, as it's university level. But it's a great job, nice apartment and we'll over 20 000 in the hand after paying rent and tax. Really nice campus. Nice city, but away from the city centre. Great bosses, lots of autonomy. Best job I ever had. |

Are you saying that Tuesday and Thursday classes are at your discretion or your office hours on those days are at your discretion.
Your rate of pay indicates that you are teaching at a private international university. Am I right? |

I think this is a key point. It's not just about the number of hours worked, it's about the associated working conditions, the autonomy / freedom to design your lessons and teach the way you see fit, and the overall environment in which you work. I don't think I could handle my current 40+ teaching hours in different conditions (at least long term). |

Yes, it's private, international... More or less. Some politics between the international Uni and the local affiliate... Tuesday and Thurday we can go into or stay home. Nobody is checking up. Nice people, the Chinese. |

12 hours of classes for approaching 20.000? Now I would be prepared to put the effort in for that kind of return....sadly 7.500 = extensive film viewing for the last 2 days before the hols.... |

Actually, it's quite a bit over 20 000 clear, after rent and tax. There are some nice places to eat here on campus. A few teachers often gather in a simple outdoor area near the apartments and drink Tsingdao at 6 Kwai a large bottle, and they even sell international brands at pretty cheap prices. No need to spend a lot of money round here. The cost of living is cheap, life is good. And the bosses seem to want to invite us to dinners every week or two to get us drunk, which is fine by me. They even gave us a thousand Kwai red packet at mid-Autumn festival, completely unexpected. I must have been good in a previous life. |

| River Mystic: Good for you. What city are you in? They must demand a lot of qualifications to get that gig. |
