Hi all,

I've just moved to primary school teaching in China and I am teaching young learners (8-9 years old). My previous experience in Uzbekistan was with teenagers and adults. The dynamics of the classrooms here are quite different, so I feel the need to get trained up for this age group. Someone told me about the young learner extension to CELTA. However, upon looking it up I was surprised to find it's being discontinued:

Does anyone know why this is? What are the alternatives to CELTYL available?

Thanks,

Matt

Obviously, that would be proper certification (e.g., PGCE) or a teaching license from your home country. Otherwise, do an Internet search using tefl cert children for TEFL course providers that offer a cert for young learners (although this is a poor to mediocre substitute for the real thing).

"Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC): This specialist certificate is designed for qualified English language teachers and is designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge to teach English to children and adolescents in the age range 7–16.

The qualification was developed in association with the British Council in Madrid, with its wide-ranging expertise in both young learner teaching and continuing professional development. Initially only available through British Council training centres, TYLEC is now available to any training centre that meets Trinity’s rigorous validation criteria. All TYLEC courses are validated and moderated by Trinity College London."

CELTYL and now TYLEC has its uses. To suggest that everyone should do a PGCE, or has the time and funds to do so, is ridiculous. You didn't even know about TYLEC until googling it having already declared it unworthy. I'd suggest replying to threads when you have at least a modicum of insight.

TYLEC courses are rare and prices seem to vary hugely. The BC Singapore offer the three-week course regularly for around £1000. Meanwhile the BC Kiev ran a course, or planned to do so, earlier this year did around £300. A couple of the IH schools in Spain offer TYLEC.

No need to personalize my post by reading more into it; I simply put a brief description and the link out there based on bograt's suggestion while factoring in the OP's immediate need. People can do their own research to determine which course fits their particular current teaching schedule and career goals.

Oh and thanks for this incite [sic]. Why not just tell him to marry an EU citizen and live a sponsored life on smug street? [/b]

To be discontinued in December 2016

As part of our regular review of the assessment services which we provide, we have decided to discontinue the Young Learner (YL) Extension to CELTA after December 2016. We are giving extensive notice of this change so that you won’t be affected if you’ve already started a preparation course.

http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/teaching-english/teaching-qualifications/celta/young-learner-extension-to-celta/

You obviously already know this, but I'm just reposting for anyone who might not know where this information came from.

I've still never heard an explanation as to why they are discontinuing it. I contacted my CELTA tutors and they had no idea.
