Greetings ESL teachers. I have a question. What is a good book for learning and familiarizing yourself with English grammar rules. One that can be studied as if you were majoring in English at college? I want to get much of the English rules down so I can across as being knowledgeable on this stuff.

Keys to Teaching Grammar to English Language Learners
by Keith Folse

This book is truly invaluable. Grab a copy.

-It covers all the basic English grammar concepts in detail.
-It specifically addresses questions students ask that are particularly tough to answer.
-It gives tips about which grammar concepts are most difficult for students of different language backgrounds.

I really like How English Works: A Grammar Practice Book by Swan and Walter. A little more readable and better presented than most other grammar books. The pictures are good, too.

Actually those that major in English at university don't study grammar, as they already know it. Those that don't know it, don't major in English. We studied history of English... and with my MA in Linguistics, I studied such things as sociolinguistics, phonetics, psycholinguistics, pragmatics, and advanced grammar theory... none of which will help you much in the ESL/EFL classroom. Cool

For assistance in teaching grammar, I too like the Folse book.
