For those of you currently on the ground in Thailand. What is the general feeling of the mood in society? Is it mostly depressed with the official one year of mourning that was declared or does daily life go on as normal now?

Sorry, not currently in Thailand; that would be foolish.
Life does go on in Thailand, although not everything is "fine".
The major concern is not depression, but political division and economic doldrums on top of the usual incompetence.
Looking on the bright side, Thailand is now giving out free visas to anyone in the world, literally begging for tourists to bring in some money.

That's the other bit of good news, but again there's a reason which is not so positive: Pay is the same as 20 years ago. So, yes, lots of schools are looking NOW for teachers to start in January, the beginning of the new semester.
If you just want to rock up in Thailand and have a good time, that's still on. |

Just a minor correction... 2nd semester in universities starts in January
but
2nd semester in regular schools still starts in mid May.
The 2nd semester will end the 1st week of March.
In early / mid January the students will be doing their mid term exams.

| I got my 1 year extension the other day in CM. Noticeably fewer applicants than last year, with the biggest drop being in the number of backpacker types. I think a lot of them finally got the message that you are not suppose to live here on tourist visas, and enforcement has become much more strict. As a result, there seems to be more demand for teachers as they no longer have an endless supply of people desperate for work. |

| So I imagine the tourist places are quiet? Is there still an alcohol ban? I am thinking of popping over from China for a week over Christmas. The hotels are cheap, but if everything is closed down, not much point. I'm not much for the dodgy night spots, but like live music. Will all that be gone? |

| Bars are open...many shut at 12..but I think Mandalay Club is open way late in Chiang Mai. The alcohol ban was just very few select days. |
