Japan has supported the poaching of elephants in Africa by allowing the sales of inkan / hanko (personal signature ink stamps) made from illegally harvested and sold ivory.
Ivory produced before the world ban is permitted under an international agreement. However, The Japan Wildlife Research Center, an independent organization put in charge by the Japanese government to enforce the ban on new ivory, was caught on 8 occasions telling undercover agents posing as ivory sellers how to draw up fake documents to put the illegal ivory on the market.
Yahoo Japan is a major culprit in this illegal and barbaric trade. Its sales of ivory increased dramatically from 3,800 ivory products in 2005 to 28,000 products in 2015 (including 438 whole tusks).
The profits from ivory coming from African poachers funds rebel militias and terrorist groups like The Lord's Resistance Army, Al-Shabaab, and Boko Haram.
Here's the full article. Please help the remaining elephants in Africa by sharing it with your students and friends. Cheers. http://www.takepart.com/article/2016/12/05/japan-reconsiders-its-role-driving-slaughter-elephants?cmpid=tpdaily-eml-2016-12-05 |
