So I got my work permit and letter of invitation a few days ago after months of waiting. I excitedly took my visa application and supporting documents to the China visa service centre in Edinburgh. The excitement dissipated rather quickly as I was told they have never seen the type of work permit I had. I have since found out that certain provinces including Guangdong where I am going are trailing a new unified work permit. I have since been informed that I can't apply in Edinburgh as only the UK embassy is able to process the new permit and not the consulates so Edinburgh and Manchester visa centres can't process this permit during the trial/transitional phase. The school also thought I didn't need the duly authorised letter of invitation with this permit which it turns out I do. Basically I went yesterday thinking I could hand it in and go 4 days later to pick my visa up to now having to wait 10 working days on the school sending the new invitation letter and then need to apply via post as I can't get down to London in person and postal applications take 2 weeks. So now need to wait till the middle of January when I thought I'd be in China for Christmas. Just a warning to new applicant's.

Oh bugger. You mean you have to go to the UK embassy of China? Please keep us up to date - I expect I will have to do this soon. So gratifying to know that the visa offices in the UK are up to date on this matter Rolling Eyes

I have to post my application to the Visa centre in London as they send it on to the embassy where as the centres in Edinburgh and Manchester send the application to the local consulate in those cities. So I don't have to turn up in person to the embassy like I did when I went to the USA thank God. Or at least the London centre had not seen a new permit processed at any of the consulates yet during the trial/transition phase of this work permit being introduced. I'll update the thread periodically as it might help other UK based applicants.

I made a query to the visa centre about this and got this reply:

You can still submit your work visa application in the other visa centre as long as your working documents from China is address to that specific visa centre.

Does this correspond to what you were told?

Yes the person I spoke to in London did say this but said that she hadn't heard of one of the new permits listing anywhere other than London. I suppose I will know more once I get my government issued letter in a couple of weeks and actually see what centre is written on it.

The school said they think I'll be able to apply in Edinburgh but need to wait on the government letter so should have that in a week or 2 and I'll update once I get it.

Anyone knowhow long it usually takes to get the duly authorised invitation letter? Its been going on 4 weeks and no word yet. Starting to feel like I'm never getting it.
