Hi Everyone,

I am currently a teacher in China. One of my students, a 50 year-old adult, tells me that his dream job is becoming an English teacher, much as we are. I told him I'd research books that helped him directly do this.

Is there any books, websites, etc. where he could learn techniques that we learned to get our CELTA, etc.?

I feel very humble in asking this question, as I am a CELTA holder but do not have the slightest idea of how to develop a teacher training curriculum. I'd like him to be able to teach basic English right alongside me.

1. The so-called "apple book" (nicknamed because there has always been a picture of an apple on every edition's cover) may be a useful source:

Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language, 4th ed., edited by Celce-Murcia, Brinton, and Snow

https://www.amazon.com/Teaching-English-Second-Foreign-Language/dp/1111351694/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482130994&sr=8-1&keywords=teaching+english+as+a+second+of+foreign+language

There are lots of chapters going over the basic components of teaching ESL/EFL. I find it to be a pretty comprehensive title, i.e., there's a little bit of everything within (oh oh! redundancy!).

2. The following website may serve up a nice practical potpourri for in-class activities:

from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs: American English: For English Language Teachers around the World

https://americanenglish.state.gov

In particular the quarterly journal English Teaching Forum may be useful as well. One can access pdf copies of it from the aforementioned website:

You mean, "are" there any books....

Even if your student doesn't pursue the CELTA, does he have the following:

- A standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
- English proficiency to teach at a range of levels? (Minimum CEFR Level C1–C2 or above.)

The CELTA syllabus also seems to be a useful document:

How to Teach English by Jeremy Harmer and Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener would both be good places to start.

And there are even relatively painless and substantially cheaper Chinese translated versions available for some of these books. For example, I found the following by simply searching Amazon China for 'Harmer ELT 中文':

These two titles serve up lots of activities with a bit of rationale for their implementation:

1. Teaching ESL/EFL Reading and Writing by I.S.P. Nation

2. Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking by I.S.P. Nation and Jonathan Newton
