My student turned in an essay a couple months late and contradicted me on my deadline, which was last week. Rather than argue about it, I took the essay and read it. It was original, which made it different from the "copy & write" essays we did in class. Here are some excerpts:
"Weddings are important occasions in Saudi life. . . .In the past, families arrange marriages with the tribe or family's considerations in mind. Sons and daughters have been encouraged to marry cousins or other relatives in order to increase and strengthen the extended family. At least in the 1990, most marriages in Saudi were between close relatives - sometimes a second cousin but usually a first cousin."
It reminded me of why I left this place the 1st time around. |

It seems your student's essay was a "copy & paste" from Wikipedia:
"Traditionally, in Saudi Arabia (and other Gulf countries),families arrange marriages with the tribe or family's considerations in mind, rather than Western/modern ideas of romantic love and self-identity. Sons and daughters have been encouraged to "marry cousins or other relatives in order to increase and strengthen" the extended family or tribe, "or occasionally to marry into another tribe in order to heal rifts". At least in the 1990s, most marriages in Saudi were "consanguineous"—i.e. between close relatives—sometimes a second cousin but usually a first cousin."
