Just curious here, more than a few people I meet swear by them as a lucrative way to earn a living, sorry, but anyone here go along with that idea?

Use sahibinden.com and see how many non-native English tutors at charging 70-100 TL/hr here in Istanbul. As a native-speaker of English, you can charge professionals 100-120 TL/hr, and I know someone who even found a businessperson willing to pay 200 TL/hr. For college students I imagine it might be lower (70 TL/hr?) and then even lower for children in grade school (50 TL/hr?). I don't know about it being a full time job, but it's a good way to supplement your income if you're interested in that, especially since native speakers of English seem to be on the decline these days.

If you work at a university, you may make anywhere between 4000 and 5000 TL. And 5000 TL is about $ 1,391 US. It is not a lot for teaching ESL, mind you, though it's good by Turkish standards. If you're tutoring, you're going to make 100 TL an hour, roughly. Some may make 120 or 150 TL per hour. I do it to supplement my income as it is not very high, when you take the exchange rate into consideration. You won't be making money hand-over-fist. You'll be supplementing your income. You could conceivably make 1600 TL if you're a busy tutor. Not everyone is that lucky. If you're working, it's not easy to juggle tutoring many students and working.
