Hi all,

I have an interview coming up at this institution, and I'm just wondering if anyone has any information about conditions, salary, etc.

I currently work for a very good institution in China, and I'm very happy professionally. However, for a number of non-work-related reasons, I'm considering a move from my current city. CUHK-SZ, and maybe more importantly Shenzhen itself, seems like a potentially good fit.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I had an interview, and I wasn't very impressed. They didn't seem well organized. Basically, the whole interview was some guy picking my brain about how we do things at my current institution.

Then, at the end of the interview, they asked me to send them my references. I said, well, two of my referees are my bosses here, and I obviously don't want to ask them for a letter unless I decide to leave, so, if you make me an informal offer and I decide to accept, then I'll send them. The interviewer said that wasn't ok - he needed them straightaway. So, that was pretty much the end of that.

Then, the next morning, without warning, I got some strange email from them saying that I had 24 hours to complete some kind of written task. I replied that I wanted to withdraw my application.

I'm sure they pay pretty well, and Shenzen is, in my opinion, a good place to live. If I weren't happy where I am, I might have considered it anyways. But I didn't get the feeling that they really know what they're doing down there.

It wasn't that simplistic attitude and motivation test were to complete online was it?

I had an interview there about six months ago. It seemed to go well, and I actually wanted to work there. They said they would contact me within a few days. After they didn't, I contacted the admin woman. She said they couldn't guarantee a job, but that my application was "positive." She said they would inform me shortly. Apparently they had to seek approval from the HK campus before hiring. So I suspect they recommended me, but were waiting for the nod. Anyway, they never got back... two weeks passed, sent them another email, same answer... another week, repeat... I stopped emailing. They never did bother to get back to me, just so typical of Chinese institutions. They couldn't even bother sending a generic email to inform an interviewee. I put weeks of work into that interview, and the sods treated me like dirt. Of all the interviews I have ever had at Chinese universities - and there are quite a few - not one ever bothered to get back to me when I wasn't successful. Tells you a lot about Chinese society in general, and the way workers are typically treated here.

Anyway, I soon got an even better position at higher academic rank, higher pay in a better location. They treat me very well. Very happy where I am.
