Any EFL jobs in Cebu? Or shall I stay in Taiwan/China/Korea? How much they pay? I don't think anyone needs English there do they? |

There are a few jobs around. Salaries are low (£10 per day) and they do not come with a visa (you work illegally on your tourist extensions) or any other benefits (no medical, housing airfare, etc).
Thailand pays entry level TEFL teachers about £23/day with no benefits.
In Taiwan you should be able to easily earn about £40/day with no benefits.
In Korea, even entry level EFL jobs will get you about £50/day PLUS airfare and housing.
Work in Korea (18k quid/year plus benefits) and vacation in Cebu rather than work in Cebu (3k quid/year with no benefits).

That IS what I am currently doing. I am working in Korea or rather have been working in Korea. My job has ended and I am heading to Taiwan for a Public School job which pays £1800 per month (69,950 TWD) so more than £40/day. I went to Cebu at New Year to see my GF. I want to be near her so I am willing to work in Taiwan which is the same salary as Korea. Plus I am working online for a major Chinese English company and I have been earning like $150 per day at the moment just sitting at home doing 20 x 30min lessons a day. I could do it in Cebu but my GF uses Tatoo for her WIFI connection and I am not sure it would be good enough for video chat. I have been looking around Asia to tell you the truth to see where the most lucrative jobs are. This PS job in Taiwan is going to be a nice little gig I think and only 2 hours 45 min to Cebu I think. |

You are working your way around the Asia boards, aren't you?
Besides my 5 years in China which I offered my advice to you on, I also spent a couple years in Cebu. I worked in a university teaching Business English for three months but quit after my three month probation contract as I truly hated it.
There are a fair amount of Koreans, Japanese and Saudis studying English there and quite a few small schools to serve them. Some will look for native speaking teachers, but as mentioned above, not great pay. Few are authorized to hire non Filipinos so you run some risk of getting deported and still have to do the constant visa renewals unless you get married.
Your best option is to teach online if Cebu is your calling. I have been doing it for the last few years and tons of options. The issue in Cebu of course is the Internet. Some schools have even blacklisted the country.
However, reports are that it is now "better". At least to the point where you can invest in a service like speedify to have good reliability and speeds. My friend there teaches online successfully and uses it. If you have a Mac you can pull of combining connections too with a little know-how.
I lived very close to IT Park and was frustrated at the lack of available rentable "seats" available to take advantage of the Internet in the Park. There was Regus, but they wanted a lot of money - work for your commercial rent so to say. There is now, however, a place called the Tide that rents seats at reasonable prices along with possibly a few new others.
Since this all seems to revolve around your girlfriend - just go there. |

Good comments on this post, may I add mine?
A lucrative online online salary surely justifies investing in a decent internet connection (maybe through SKY)?
Cebu has standstill traffic at peak hours (checkout "WAZE"), so commutes are getting out of the question.
The remaining few face-to-face schools mostly teach English to Koreans or Japanese.
The bigger, better schools have syndicated so salaries are now effectively capped.
There are too many retirees prepared to work for mere beer money.
Koreans make their life education plans through agencies who hammer the schools for up to 30% commission, meaning no pay increases affecting long term job viability/security.
You will probably have to pay withholding tax (PAYE).
Teachers mostly have to attend residential schools for 8 hours x 5 days, although actual class time and pay could be as little as 3 hours a day @ $8/hr!
Korean male students prefer the warmth of female teachers and dating potential, some even got married.
In relation to $1,000+ salaries the cost of accommodation is high, electricity extortionate and western food is (with a piece of meat and few potatoes) expensive.
With respect, I personally would look for an even better part-time job in Hanoi or Saigon and have my girlfriend visit me since co-habitation is possible providing both passports are registered at the start of a rental contract (Filipinos can also do cheap road trips to Cambodia for 30 day tourist visa renewals that will be much cheaper than yours in Philippines!

Long-distance relationships are a major hassle. None of the options mentioned sound terrific. Just an idea, you both could potentially find work in a country that recruits filipinos and just meet up there, where both of you are able to make good money (e.g., Qatar/UAE). Good luck out there. |

Sure, head to conservative (and expensive) countries where cohabitation is illegal.
Anyway, the OP was "escorted" off the forum a week ago. |

LOL
"Long-distance relationships are a major hassle."
True that. Then again, being close to a Filipina and her family is a major hassle too. |
