Hey guys!
It's been awhile. Last I was on here, I was about to go to the CELTA in Galapagos, but a family emergency sent me home after 5 months in Latin America before the class. I'm stuck stateside working 80 hours a week, but I have about 1 day off a week and some down time in the morning. My goal is to try to volunteer to help the demand needed in my area in prisons/jails and the refugee center helping with ESL classes, until I can safely take off somewhere to do the CELTA and classroom training.
I know the groupon classes aren't the best in the world and you get what you're paying for, but for right now, do you think it'll give me enough of a background (information-wise) to support me doing informal classes in prisons and the refugee center? I don't want to hinder possible growth from my students if I can't learn well enough from this, and should just wait until I come back with a CELTA
Little about me, I have a BA in Criminology, certified group facilitator / teacher for parenting, life skills, and a morality based curriculum, and I'm about to start my M.A in Sociology soon. I've informally taught and volunteered in Guatemala tutoring in a women's prison. |

Interesting work you're doing, I have similar experience in the past. I think you would benefit far more from studying on your own, focusing on basic adult literacy skills (right down to how to hold a pencil, what end of the paper is up, which direction to practice writing in). These can be useful to both contexts.
This is a Canadian publication, but I think you'll find it highly beneficial and worth a lot more than any groupon class.

Another option... Instead of taking on a teaching situation in which you're on your own, consider a role as a volunteer classroom assistant or in-class tutor at one of your local nonprofit refugee/ESL literacy organizations that includes orientation/basic training for new volunteers. Plus, as an assistant/in-class tutor, you would work alongside seasoned classroom teachers. This gives you opportunities to observe different teaching styles and classroom scenarios as well as lead some of the learning activities yourself while under the classroom teacher's guidance. |

yes that is essentially what i am doing (i started today). I wish i knew more about english grammar and rules and what not, which was why i was thinking about the course....i was able to learn some arabic today while tutoring in english - had a great time. Looking forward to next week's tutoring sessions. |
