And as for the question of who would want to live in Saudi for a decent - but not spectacular - salary, well, in my case, the answer would be someone who did the wild ESL teacher thing for a few years, married a nice local girl, had a kid or two, and wanted to settle somewhere for a few years on something more than a hogwan salary. If I was a swinging bachelor, I wouldn't even consider it. Those were the days.... |
True indeed, it would be hard to be a swinging bachelor in KSA on 12k-14k a month. Trips to lovely Bahrain alone would eat through that sum pretty quick, let alone trips elsewhere. |

Not sure about sowdy, but in Oman many teachers routinely spent weekends in the Emirates, so I am not sure it is a one glove fits all scenario. Yes, Bahrain seems expensive from doing my research, but a "weekend" once or twice a month should certainly be doable for a bachelor in sowdy, it all depends on the person, whether they like a few beers or not, and women, and cinemas, and all that Bahrain offers, and also their budget and/or savings target surely? |

And 12,000-14,000 SARs a month is derisory for someone with a masters and CELTA/DELTA + a few year's experience. Who would seriously want to live in the Magic Kingdom for such a paltry amount? |
The salary may seem so-so, but considering they provide family housing, tuition fees, airfare for dependents, 60 days annual paid vacation, etc., it sort of evens out. Besides, we've been saying that salaries have been on the decline the past 10 years. (I guess some folks are still in denial.) |
The only 'benefits' a single person really gets is small, mediocre housing. So a family person will cost the university double (or more) what a single person would in terms of larger and nicer housing, health care, airfare, schooling, etc. This is obviously unfair to single person in terms of total pay. Many of these direct-hire uni gigs offer packages that are heavily slanted toward the benefits but offer low pay. So if you can't take advantage of the benefits, it's best to give it a pass in my view. |

The bigger the savings goal, the more ongoing self-restraint is required, obviously. But the longer a single fella keeps this up in KSA, the more he risks long-term damage to his mental well-being. |

It was interesting to read tales of people who were hired by KFUPM but never actually made it there.
I was hired there some time back, but my visa was notably delayed. I couldn't want around so I took another position elsewhere. I wrote KFUPM explaining the situation, but I never heard back.
I am still interested in working there someday. Would being hired and not reporting sink my chances? Or would it mean I had a pretty clear shot of being welcome again? Or would they simply have no remembrance of me at all?

I interviewed with them in December - it went well and they said they would make me an offer, pending receipt of my references, which I duly sent off. I didn't hear from them for a month so wrote to my contact there to ask if my references had been received, which was confirmed. This was about a month ago and still no formal offer.
I don't feel like chasing them up anymore as the ball is firmly in their court. Is this normal? Can I expect an offer further down the line? |

They take their time. I would expect an offer in the next few weeks. |

I noticed that, but I applied through their website last year, and it's been advertised a couple of times while my application is ongoing. It's all a bit mysterious and comes with the territory I suppose. |

Sounds very typical of many Saudi employers. Keep you hanging around waiting for them to deign to contact you when they can be bothered, as if you have nothing better to do. |

If you never showed up, that means there was nothing to cancel, at least as far as the Saudi government goes. A visa is only good for a limited time, so had you been issued one, it simply would have gone unused. As for KFUPM, if you never accepted their offer to begin with, then you never backed out of anything or went back on your word, rescinded, etc.. The issue was merely one of practicality. Everyone needs an income, and in your case the timing just didn't work out. So you try again. But be sure to account for lags due to bureaucracy this time if you're serious about working there. Of course, KFUPM might take a different stance: that you were never serious about working there because had you been, you would have stayed the course and endured the delay and loss of income. The only way to know for sure is to send the department an email and see what they say.

Obviously take a shot when you're ready - nothing to lose.
But, they are fairly well-known for blacklisting past applicants who were either turned down or offered but didn't jump.
How that list is maintained or if it's really managed is unknown to me, but I know of this "policy" being enforced on two occasions.
Best of luck |

According to their job advert, the salary is 'competitive', but it will be a range depending on qualifications and experience. I would estimate the starting offer to be between 13k-17k, with the upper end for 10+ years related post-MA experience and some time in the ME. There is OT available from what I gather, but I doubt you will have much energy left to do much of it, though as some have stated, the worship of Mammon is rife. If you are single and can work all the OT, and don't need to play too much in Bahrain, you should be good to go. |
