|
|
Hi all,
I will move to Guangzhou city to start teaching in either Aug/Sep.
I have been in Vietnam teaching and by August I will have almost 2 years experience.
I have a TESOL 120 online and a Bsc in Computing.
Looking for general do's and dont's for applying.
Any recruiters to avoid or schools?
I will be living there with my gf who is Vietnamese. She will be studying Mandarin there. Should I not mention this to recruiters when applying or will they care? I don't want any hassle about it further down the line.
Many thanks for your comments |

Following your GF to China? Good luck with that.
Recruiters do not need to know about your personal life.
You should find employment easily. |

1. Talk to as many recruiters as you want/need to.
2. Since you have selected the area you want to work you are one step ahead. I found my first job was a stepping stone to something better. This happened in Japan, Korea, and then China. So, even if it doesn't work out in Guangzhou, use that school as best you can to find another school.
3. Typically, I look for 20 class hour jobs, housing or allowance, salary of at least 8-9,000 RMB per month. This changes if you are at a university, expect less. If you are at a language school, expect more.
4. I have only found one school in China to avoid, and it's nowhere near Guangzhou.
5. When I went to Korea I found a formula that worked wunderbar. In China, it hasn't failed either. What you do is sign a contract with a school that sends you to other schools. Make sure you only get sent out to two schools regularly and maybe a third if a teacher is sick.
6. Getting pictures of the apartment/room where you will stay might be difficult, but if you can try to. Otherwise, ask questions like, "Will there be a bed in the bedroom?", "Will there be a sink in the kitchen?", "Will there be a toilet in the bathroom?" That kind of stuff. |

You're kidding. You did this in CHINA? The school told you that you'd be farmed out to other schools beforehand? LOL!
And that's a desirable situation?

1. Waste of time.
2. He didn't select it
3. I have a similar salary at a uni. I work one day a week (4 hours). 20+ hours should be minimal 15,000K + housing, allowance, etc
4. Only one huh.
5. WTF?
6. Not as difficult as booking a flight to China. |

Yeah this is absurd, no teacher wants double duty, sent from one place to another.
Think of the opportunity cost of your time (wasted) going to multiple places, all for the same salary. All teachers (employees in general) want a single place of employment and preferably closer to work -less travel time since they don't pay you for the time to get there. As a foreigner not knowing the language and area it is even more important to stick to one place. |

You are one of the first foreigners I have come across that actually likes being farmed out to other places. The mind boggles. Your posts are becoming more Jekyll and Hyde like each time.
I certainly wouldn't want being farmed out to other places, why spend all my free time travelling too and fro? Each to their own and all that but advising people that this is the way to go.... |
