I'm currently interviewing for jobs in Shanghai, Ningbo, HZ. It seems that background check requests are a common thing. I have no criminal record, however I have an out-of-state DUI that is five years old.
1. Do schools typically require an FBI check? Or just a state check?
2. Will this become a massive hurdle towards gaining employment in China? |

Really? All the feedback over the last couple years has been for an FBI check? Can you expend on this? Is this very recent? Did you encounter this in a particular province? It is possible some jurisdiction have lightened up on this requirement, but the FBI has seemed the trend in more jurisdictions.
You are screwed if it is FBI as the DUI will show up. It must come back SPOTLESS. If I were the poster, I would ask the schools for the type required and see if you can get by with a state. Then I would do online research to try to verify that the school's answer is accurate before proceeding.
I should add that you are focusing on the Eastern provinces which are pretty stringent. Shanghai has liberalized, and you may want to focus on other regions of China. |

| For private schools, Chinese consulates only require a local background check. I am not sure what the rules for public schools are. |

If FBI checks are the new deal, then basically you would need a clean report to work legally. I also understand that as of April 2017, the new rules are to apply throughout China and that 59 years old is the new cut-off (i.e., you can turn 60 during your contract). |

Bottom line: Apply and see. And if it turns out you can't work legally in China, it won't be the end of the world. |

If it shows up on the check, then yes. Get it expunged . |
If I get it expunged, it will still show up on my background check. |

| This is probably still the case throughout most of China, but no one seems to know if and when that will change and if the 'new visa procedures' will affect this. So, again, apply and see. |

All you had to do was submit that? Most have to sign something similar IN ADDITION to a background check.
With China's new attempt to crack down on fake documents, I doubt State checks will suffice within the next few years. |

For my current job (September 2016 start) I had to do the same. For my next job (August 2017 start) I have to have a police background check. |
