|
|
I've been looking for a job in China (primarily Beijing) and have received a lot of interest. I recently signed a contract with Best Learning. But then I looked on the internet and that school is full of absolute horror stories. Upon further research, I found many recruiters scam teachers and fail to get them Z visas once they arrive. I don't want to risk it so I'm looking for a different job now.
I am fully qualified and have over 6 years working overseas. I'm just nervous about finding a reputable and honest job in China. If anyone knows of any trustworthy jobs or recruiters who are hiring at the moment, your suggestions would be warmly welcomed. |

6 years abroad yet you didn't do your research before signing the contract?
You should never arrive on a tourist visa.
If you have Wechat, pm me. I'll add you to some job groups. |

Yeah Chris, I admit I jumped the gun there a bit. I'm just really in dire need of a job and they made a seemingly wonderful offer. I'll add you on wechat, thanks |

I think as a group of China vets(survivors) we tend to be too harsh on first timers. Yes, he should have done more research, especially having done Thailand, which I hear can be a little shifty for employment. At the same time, I don't think it is fathomable to the uninitiated the breadth and depth of Mainland Chinese s*** until one experiences it first hand.
I would stay away from recruiters and just apply directly after researching schools that meet your interests and geographic location.
Better yet, considering what you said in this thread and the one on visas, you would be best to avoid China for good right now. Your girlfriend is highly unlikely to find legal work, and it costs some serious upfront time and money to have the privilege of teaching in the PRC.
If you are so intent to do so and your welcome in Thailand is worn out, I would go to Kuala Lumpur or Vietnam where the cost of living is low and they have sufficient Internet to teach online. You can hook up real easy with an online gig teaching little Chinese emperors and empresses for good money these days. Your Russian girlfriend can build up Russian students on CafeTalk and such or offer low rate English classes which cheap Asians will snatch up. |

I usually sigh and say 'here we go again'.
But this OP's gambit was so lacking in awareness that I reacted negatively.
That said, Jim's comment is probably as near to the mark as you can get.
Alternatively, the Russian partner may get something at a Foreign Language U. Both could then work at the same school. There is one FLU in Dalian (well, actually out at Lushun) and there may be one or two others in PRC.
At least one BJ University has a School of Russian Language which I believe is subsidized by Moscow. |

Really don't need the condescending, holier-than-thou posts. Thanks to everyone giving helpful info in the thread |

In a perfect world, a foreign teacher would be able to correspond directly with a representative Chinese school. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world, and unless one actually goes to the school to speak to someone, he can't be sure if he's dealing with someone at the school or if he's dealing with a recruiter who has a school email address. I'd rather know with whom I am dealing and not go through a whole drama only to be handed off to someone else when It comes time to make a commitment.
esljobs.com has recruiters who PAY to be part of a consortium. I have used them, and I know others who has used their services. I hear that Dave's forum members have had good luck with the recruiters who pay to advertise on this website. You might want to check out Serious Teachers.com.
DON'T put your resume on a board to which anyone can see and contact you.
To get a good idea of what the various types of schools pay throughout China, look into abroadchina.com. |

Absolutely no value in this holier than thou suggestion? |

Seriousteachers.com has worked for me although before the Sept hiring season gets underway (May/June) expect a lot of language mill and speculative responses. |

The Wikipedia page for most cities has an Education link in a sidebar and most tertiaries will be listed.
Not often the actual school website will linked but armed with a school name you can get to a website via Google.
Once on the site look for 'International' or 'Foreign Affairs Office'.
I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but again there is no easy path at this time of year.
This is a post of mine from Nov 2015. If (OP) you have time on your hands you can go the direct approach.
It's a slog but cut and paste can save some of the drudgery.
Best

Serious Teachers, Higheredjobs, and networking tend to be enough to find a decent job. |

My thought that if the Russian partner wants a chance at being paid for what she brings to the table, a FLU gig would be best. Better still if OP works at the same place. Otherwise she might feel like the 'poor relation' and that's not a good formula for a happy domestic situation.
School gets 2 teachers for one apartment and less cost for utilities supplied. |
