Hi,
If you are already in Thailand as a tourist is it always essential to depart Thailand and apply for the Non Immigrant B (teaching) visa in a neighbouring country?
I have this from the Thai embassy website for Laos:
Foreign citizens who hold a Transit Visa (“TS”) or Tourist Visa (“TR”) and wish to engage in business activities in Thailand may apply for a change of type of visa (e.g., from Tourist Visa to Non-Immigrant Visa) at the Office of the Immigration Bureau Office located at Government Center B, Chaengwattana Soi 7, Laksi, Bangkok 10210, Tel 0-2141-9889, www.immigration.go.th The granting of change of type of visa and extension of stay is at the discretion of the immigration officer.
Does anyone have any experience of this? |

IF you have the correct documentation AND
you have more than 15 days remaining on your allowed period of stay
THEN you can do a change of status from TR to non-B at your local immigration office.
I did that back in 2010 and we regularly do it for new staff who join us at our school.
The fly in the ointment is that most applicants coming from 3rd countries (rather than direct from home) usually do not have their documentation ready or their documentation is incomplete and then they fly in on a 30-day visa exempt entry and end up running out of time (not having that required 15-days period remaining) thus needing to exit and get a new TR or do their non-B application outside of Thailand.
If you have a 60-day entry (with an allowed 30-day extension) then you should have time to get your paperwork in order to do a change of status from TR to non-B.
AFTER your paperwork is ready your school will need to apply to the local education and labor office for permission to hire you. Those letters (and they typically take 2-3 weeks to get them from those offices) are necessary to do the change of status (along with your documentation and some paperwork from the school).
