the university where i've decided to work this year has sent me the contract. after a 2nd and 3rd reading, i notice the following:

Quote:
2. Party A will pay for Party B his/her local telephone bill of less than RMB 50 Yuan per month and his/her electricity bill for less than 100 kilowatt/hour monthly. The excessive expenditure shall be born by Party B.

i'm not concerned about the phone, i have a mobile, but as far as power goes, i'm a bit concerned. i was in guangxi last winter and had to have a space heater going the whole time i was in the flat to be comfortable. same with the air-con in spring and summer. i guess hangzhou will be much the same. however, by telling me that they'll pay for the first 100kw is completely useless as i have no idea how much power a heater or any other appliance uses for that matter.

does anyone have experience paying all or part of their own electricity bill? should i negotiate with them and ask them to foot the power bill?

warmest regards ~ 7969

In the "pleasant" months of Hangzhou (March, April, May, October, November) we get 200 units free and then pay the overage at .7 yuan per. In the other hotter/colder months, we get 300 free units. Although I am not a electric HOG, I do tend to go over by about 75 to 100 units each month. Heater/AC, computer, television, hot water heater, lights, DVD player - - it all tends to add up. If you are very conservative, you may only use 100 to 200 every month.

I just took a quick peek at my own contract:

Quote:
Party A will pay for Party B water and electricity bill of RMB 300 yuan, the excessive expenditure shall be born by party B. The gas, internal phone, and surfing on the Internet are free, but the city call, long distance call, and international call shall be born by Party B.

So you see that kev and I are both getting quite a bit more than 100 Yuan. In my case, 300 has been more than enough to cover utilities, as I haven't seen a bill yet.

Maybe you could cite 200 - 250 as a "standard" compensation amount for foreign experts, and see what they'll give you.

In my contract it is 150 RMB a month per teacher. If the bills are over 150 we pay the difference.
as for you case, 7969, you should check with the company which provides electricity. You can find out how much is one kw and then how much they charged you for that month. You can do simple calculations based on that.

I deem a 100 kuai free use of power a bit on the low side; if you don't use a heater or aircon it might be alright, but heaters drive it up quickly to 150 or more. Aircons are even worse.
But then again, if they are so frank about it upfront what's your beef with them? Everybody else will no doubt have to pay for the balance if they use up more energy; how much is your salary? Put it in relation to that!

100kw hours per month is very low. in guangxi i had a space heater or two going almost constantly when i was in the flat for at least three months straight. then it was the air-con. i have no beef with the school but the salary is only low average (4000RMB/16 hours) which i don't mind taking as long as i don't have to foot other expenses. they also don't mention whether or not the flats will have a computer with free internet.

at any rate, i've emailed them with these questions and my suggestions and will only wait for the response.

thanks.

My school pays for half and I pay for half of power, electricity bill. I pay for phone bill and calls of phone bill. I have computer, internet, printer, scanner that school has installed in my bedroom which is at no cost. I do not think water is measured on the electric box, does anyone know ??
