Since coming to Asia three years ago, I have been given the run-around more than a few times by Asian empolyers whom I thought were doing this to me because I am a "dispensable foreigner".

In other words, I figured they treated their own kind with more respect and consideration than they do us. Boy, was I wrong!

The other day, my Chinese girlfriend went to her weekly ESL tutor gig. It was an awful day; rain, wind...generally a day to stay inside. Anyway, off she goes on her scooter. When she gets there, the parent of the kid tells her the class is cancelled.

Oh really?

Then, the rain really comes pounding down. Nice.

This particular time, she drove from my place which is a quick three-minute scooter ride. But she normally has to drive almost 30 minutes from her campus. In the rain, on a very busy four-lane highway.

I really couldn't believe that the Chinese treat each other this way. A simple phone call to my GF and that would have been all that was needed. But the thoughtless parent lets her arrive and then tells her the class is cancelled.

I really couldn't believe the lack of respect. Perhaps the moral to the story is, us western teachers shouldn't feel like we are singled out for inconsiderate treatment by unthinking Aisan employers.

They also do it to each other.

Man, you are so right. My g/f is getting rimmed daily by her dragonlady boss. Mostly cuz of the shortcomings of the foreign teacher she is a TA for....its a lousy school so they really get the dregs....but of course, adoagh can't be expected to do a proper job so its her fault the final reports aren't done on time. Publicly reamed in front of the entire office. And for half the pay.

And still she goes back.
