I'm currently being recruited by Webi English in Shanghai. I'm a reasonably experienced TEFL teacher (Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan/Russia/Japan), but haven't tried the Chinese market as of yet. I did try the search function here but didn't come up with anybody writing about it.

Does anybody have experience with this company? They specifically want me to teach the 18+ crowd. It appears to get middling ratings on Glassdoor and high ratings on Indeed, but if somebody has direct experience with them that would be helpful.

I am finishing up a contract with Webi. I had a very good experience in Tianjin. I cannot comment specifically about the Shanghai branch though.

I sent a private message with more information.

I worked for Web near Shanghai, but no direct experience in Shanghai.

The Shanghai branches had a somewhat negative reputation, but in fairness to them that was half a decade ago. I don't think you would ever have a problem with getting paid, etc.

I would be careful of two things that you may or may know about:

Some of the Webs have become a disaster as they have allowed parents to enroll their teens. I saw first hand how this drives away the adult learners and you are left with mixed age classes, students wrestling in the hallway, etc... I don;t think the Shanghai branches have this issue.

The other is the fact that they have several offices in one of the world's largest cities. Nothing worse than obtaining an apartment with commute time minimized for one office, and then three months later being transferred to a location across town.

Adult training centers are not for everyone, even if conditions are good. But if you are outgoing, and enjoy a more fast paced environment, you will likely enjoy it and reap some benefits that are harder to find at other types of schools.

Is Webi and Web the same company? Did they change their name?

I interviewed for Web in Shanghai a few years ago. I remember the Chinese HR/interviewer lady being particularly nasty and smug in attitude. As far as I know, they only offer 15-16k RMB, which is bad for Shanghai.

They offered me a few part-time classes for a measly 200RMB per hour. I told them the minimum I would accept is 350RMB per hour.

I never heard back from them again.
