What are your ideas about this?
This is NOT a formal offer.
I am trying to get an idea about how good is this if I wanted to accept it?
I suspect this is a job posting for BEIJING.
I would go to SHENZHEN.
Please note this is a DRAMA academy....NOT a teaching English gig.
Preferred but not essential Qualifications
Native English speaker
Bachelor or Master Degree in Performing Arts / Theatre / Performance or at least one year working experience as a drama teacher with a reference letter provided
Salary and Benefit
• Salary: 15000©\19000RMB/month AFTER tax including 3000 housing allowance
• airfare reimbursement: up to 8000RMB/year
• Setup loan 5000
• Personal accident insurance and medical cash
• End of contract bonus: 5000 RMB/year
• Full Trained with Paid
• Annual leave :10 works days
• National holiday:11days /Year (paid leave)
• 5 work days with 20 teaching hours, 20 hours working hours/week
• Curriculum provided
MY OTHER IMPORTANT QUESTION: How much would I need to get set up? I would be going with very little money. How could I get an actual flat? Does a deposit really require three months rent??? |

21 days a year holiday is grim.
If you get the 15000 after tax, you'll probably need 6000 or so for a nice apartment and all bills, leaves you 9000, not the end of the world but for 40 hours a week it's not great. |

When you say it is not great...It is not great for Shenzhen? Or not great for Beijing? Or both.
Is it possible to save money on this offer? |

There is a 3,000 apartment allowance, so would be 12,000 after tax (if rent comes to 6,000). But yeah it's still a grim offer. Especially with the holiday allowance.
Drama is a change from teaching English, but I'd still pass given the low pay to high hours ratio. They are asking for someone with specific qualifications and experience and are not really giving a lot in return.
To OP: Usually you would rent a room in a hotel/hostel until you found an apartment. |

I'm subject teaching in SH and that's pretty similar to my package. I can save 6k/month without being anyway frugal.
The big thing is that I get 3.5 months/year fully paid hols which makes a world of difference! |

The company I'm finishing up with (and who is withholding pay) gave me seven days a year, over and above national holidays.
Never again.
And I'm NEVER working for a young Chinese male manager again. What a pain in the a$$! |

The way it is worded to me means that the 15000 [you won't get the 19000, I don't know why they put a range but never offer the higher amount] includes the housing allowance, so if it's 6000 you'd have 9000 after tax.
A university job paying 9000 a month with free accommodation may only ask for 16 hours a week, so doing 40 is grim.
40 means no time to do anything else really, no time for privates or such.
I'd pass. |

I am not sure why I do not get notified that people replied to the posts.
That sucks...what you are telling, because i was super excited about this.
I do not know why you are assuming that I would get 15,000 instead of 19,000?
Anyhow...lets say it was 19,000 is that bad? I am actually not sure that they even have a location in Shenzhen even..and I will not go to Beijing.
I would also like to add...that I do not drink, smoke, or go to bars...therefore, that would save a lot of money. The only habit which requires some money is eating and buying a coffee/tea outside at a nice shop.
I may travel occasionally...but my main concern is to save as much money as possible. This company has locations in Singapore, Malaysia, Capetown, Taiwan and China...so I am trying to decide which place will enable me to save the most money.
Thanks all... |

I am not a qualified teacher nor am I in a position to work in a University.
Thanks. |

Believe it or not but drinking, smoking, and bars are probably all cheaper than coffee in a nice shop in China! You can get a packet of cigarettes for less than 10 yuan. You can buy beers for 3-4 yuan. If it's a western bar then you'll be paying more, like 25-50 for an imported beer. But coffee, even at a place like starbucks will be 30+.
You can certainly save money in China. As to the wage - ask them. There's only one way to find out. Where will you be on the 15k - 19k range. My guess is closer to 15k.
Why can't you work in a university environment? They're really not hard to get into. Most will ask for a BA degree and experience. However if the university is in a smaller place, or not well known, then they'll just ask for a BA. |

Oh wow...is that right? I did not have any idea about the University! I thought it required a lot of experience and an MA?
I will definitely check it out!
My issue is that I feel unprepared to make University level lesson plans!!???
How could I manage that having never done it before???
And that really sucks about the coffee!!! I never could have guessed.
I know Beijing will be more expensive...and that seems to be the place where there are most of these drama schools. Now I wonder if Taipei or Singapore would be a better bet to save money then? It seems a nice condo outside the city would cost for a one bedroom in Singapore about 2000-2400 for a condo in an awesome complex with pool. I get the idea that the salary for this same position there (it is a franchise drama school) is 4800-5200 SGD...that's half for rent...so I wonder if I could save anything? My whole purpose to go to Asia is to SAVE MONEY.
Can i just demand the high range? |

The downside with university work is that it's low paid. Generally the lowest paid of the different types of employer. Around 5,000 or 6,000 a month is usual. However with free accommodation, long (paid) holidays, and a light schedule. Additionally, university classes are mostly oral English - get the students talking. If you teach freshmen then I feel most of your time will be spent getting the students used to speaking/using the language. Instilling a sense of confidence/ownership of the language.
Go through my post history and you'll see I'm a fan of university positions under certain circumstances. I'm not sure they suit you.
Most universities expect you to 'hit the ground running'. As in 'here's your classroom, go teach', with little input or training. If you've never taught before definitely get a TEFL cert, anything is better than nothing, and if possible get some experience before you land. Do as much research as possible, your students deserve it and it will help you. |

Thanks for this great post!
I have two BA degrees. I am getting my 320 hour TEFL certificate which completes in August via scholarship thru Premier-TEFL all kosher, etc I am excited to go next month to two European countries to complete the in-class part. I taught drama for one school year, and have experience also co-teaching English in Europe. I am also now working part-time right now for 2 companies teaching English online to China. They have the coolest software which tells you exactly what to teach. It is so very cool.
My issue is: LESSON PLANS. How to make them...?
I absolutely love the FREE FLAT and PAID HOLIDAYS...In fact....its too good! Any suggestions how I could overcome the lesson plan hurdle??
I was hoping to save enough money to get my teaching qualification in the first year...and/or MA in something...I nearly applied for an MA right now in Character Education....to teach morals and values to kids...very cool new program at Birmingham University taught ONLINE.
But now I got more excited at the idea of earning a bunch of money to get a teaching qualification within the first year....Or something else which I will not go into now.
Anyhow...thanks for posting.. |
