Hi,

I will be teaching a few Chinese second graders about simple machines, pollination, and the plant life cycle. They are coming to the US from China for the summer. I imagine their English level will be very low, so I want to focus on vocabulary and very broad overview of the topics. I will have a Chinese classroom assistant, but as much as possible I want to have the kids use English.

Does anyone have any material that corresponds to this? The kids will have manipulables to work with during the lesson. Any PDF's, documents or animation with subtitles (or in Chinese) would be helpful, thanks!

I teach these topics. Teaching through English and translating key words should be enough. You can find plenty of short videos online (no need for Chinese subtitles). You will have a TA so you should be fine. Also, I find that ‘The Magic Schoolbus' movies are excellent and my Chinese students love it。Brainpop Jr. is an excellent resource.
I teach Simple Machines using Educational LEGO and my own PPT. Here's some SM vocab for you anyway to get you started:

move 移动 gravity 重力
start 开始 axle 轴
stop 停止 gears 齿轮
fast 快 gearing up 增速齿轮
slow 慢 gearing down 减速齿轮
balance 平衡 pulley 滑轮
seesaw 跷跷板 lever 杠杆
fulcrum 支点 wheel and axle 轮轴
force 力 inclined plane 斜面
catapult 弹弓 wedge 锥子
push 推 screw 螺旋
pull 拉
friction 摩擦力

Don't know if this site will be of any use to you. I have used some materials from it.
