I survived two years in Kayseri and it wasn't a great ordeal. In fact, it was the foreigners I lived amongst who made my life difficult rather than any Turks. I made some great and enduring friendships there and would go back in an instant if it werent so bloody boring and limited in scope.
Kayseri is conservative, yes, and provincial and religious and artless and a bit overly materialistic but I never sensed hostility towards me. Bewilderment and curiosity, yes, but no hostility. I think they are just a bunch of isolated people who are living their lives as they have for a long long time, and aren't quite sure what to do with the half dozen peculiar yabancilar who are dumped into their midst every year. It's not exactly the hotbed of tourism or expats. |
