It sounds like the situation is pretty much as I feared. I have worked in ESL in more than one country, and it seems to be generally true that the quality of teaching is irrelevant if you meet a bare minimum standard.
That's why I've enjoyed working for an org with higher standards. It's not just about money, it's about job satisfaction and management that understand what you need to do a good job. I've done short stints in crappy schools, and it's depressing as hell. There's an atmosphere of lethargy and mediocrity that just saps the spirit. That's what I want to avoid. |
