Does anyone get taken in? (I have been wondering this as well.) Surely not, but on second thought...

Warm regards,

I've always wondered about those emails I've gotten that claim I can make 3000 a month teaching English to an exec's children from the inside of a luxury compound in the Swat Valley of Pakistan where I'll have to wear a kevlar vest and a hockey jersey with a large Canadian flag to dispel my Americaness.

Can the possibly be real?

Of course not. They are produced by one of the countless Scam Factories in West Africa.

On a more serious note... there are ESL opportunities here, especially in the French speaking countries. I've found work very quickly and easily. However, I'm not sure that a native English speaker of African, Caribbean or Asian background would find it so easy. There's an attitude in Africa that education is something that can only be conferred by Europeans. Image is also all important - having one or two white faces at your school gets you a lot of cachet.
BTW, West Africans are scamming or attempting to scam, each other, not only newbie teachers. I know of one case where a parent was cheated out of several hundred dollars.

I am not so sure that the new offers these days are scams. I am still trying to determine this. What I find problematic with B.U.S.T. is that I answered an ad for The University of Ghana, and a very legitimate-sounding reply came from a alleged personnel officer in B.U.S.T. There is also another problem with Cameroonian Universities. Visa regulations appear to require upfront payment of accommodations, which the university will not do until a few months probation period. I experienced this with what turned out to be a legitimate offer from the University of Bamenda a few years back.

This scam is still going, now advertising in the Philippines!
Their standard of English is still poor, still offering $8500 per month, etc., all you need is to send bank details for payment of your initial flight........, lol!

It is a real university, but the offer is a scam.
