For university jobs, age isn't a big barrier. I have a fantastic job working for a China-foreign cooperative. I'm 51, and half the foreign faculty here are older than me. I'm in really good shape, which might help. Having a PhD certainly does. There are some unbelievably poor foreign specimens lurking round (and below) the bars around here, and it seems it doesn't matter to some employers if you look like a mountain man, slobber all over your shirt and don't need to dress up to get the hungover Santa Claus gig at the annual Christmas party. I actually like these guys. They make me look real good.
